yeah thats basicaly it. but also, im looking for something that depicts war for a soldiers point fo view, not from a battle type perspective but more from an emotional side thats about the reality and feelings of soldiers in the war. now and then : here and ther , did both, from a civilians anda soldiers, yet allways concentrated on the morality behind it all, rather than the actiondemented wrote:I think what Bum wants is anime that depicts the war from a civilian's point of view

If you happen to have encounter a copy of Barefoot Gen, I suggest that you try to watch it more than once, just so you can try to pick up all the nuances. Multiple viewings also recommended because they used a different story telling device for this movie. It had a very manga-ish feel to it, I can't really explain.

Another you might try is Cockpit put out by Urban Vision Entertainment, It is on VHS so may not be what you want but I thought I would mention it. Stories of WW2 pilots. Also the original Heavy Metal Movie, had a good part about a WW2 bomber raid on germany.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

How the hell has this thread made it to 20 posts without anybody mentioning Legend of the Galactic Heroes?? This is the epitome of war anime, spanning 164 episodes and covering the perspectives of state, society, and military. It's a bit slow at first, but once it takes off, it hits hard. It's also one of the most non-judgemental war shows out there, giving every position its fair shake.

War of the galactic heroes rocks if I only I could get watchable copys of it. Ive seen to ep 5
. When I was at otakon last year this guy Jim kaposeta was a panelist and he was giving out Vhs tapes of his videos he made in the 80s. One of them was done to It's a mistake and was this awesome anime about world war 3 as it was always thought it would be in the 80s with tanks rushing across the west german border and nuclear strikes it looked awesome. But nobody has been able to tell me what this anime was.

Yeah, that's a great war anime. The scenario (and the ruler of Belgistan) you might find is eerily familiar...angelx03 wrote:Wow! No one has mentioned Gasaraki, yet.
Another good war anime is one of the Gal Force movies. Can't remember which one though.

well, the usual: Gundam Wing.
I'm watching Gundam Seed, that's oriented in the direction of GW though there are drastic differences.
Don't know if postapocalyptic stuff counts. If so, I recommend Scryed. Thats more on themes of society.
There was an anime I rented ages ago about this boy and his grandfather living on a deserted island. One day he finds a girl in their cornfields. She is a refugee and enemy forces disrupt the peace. There's a whole deal about underground cities, helping the girl escape, etc. Translated directed from the Chinese dub it's Highly Developed Futuristic City.
I so butchered the title(hey, I tried!) but the lil bit I remember should be fairly accurate. Be great if someone knows the title, wouldn't mind doing a lil recapping myself.
