subgenres are retarded

Post by DDramone » Tue May 18, 2004 10:11 am

im gonna make a big list of all the subgenres in punk, and maybe put a band or 2 that fit in that subgenre. point of this thread: there are to damn many of them!

oi punk- sham 69, 4 skins

crust punk- nausia, aus rotten

hardcore punk- black flag, bad brains

ska punk- dance hall crashers

WP (white power nazi) punk- screwdriver

hippy socialist punk (so disgustingly hippy that i dont even think oto would touch them)- resists and exist

1st wave punk- ramone, germs

2nd wave punk- bad religion

3rd wave punk- rancid

straight edge punk- minor threat

god, there are a bunch more...

the problem with all these different "sects" are that people become elitists about *their*. they pick out 2 or 3 other genres and put them down, and deny the others existance. crust punks say theyre the ultimate punks cuz theyre proud of their lack of hygine. oi punks think theyre the best cuz they hang with skins. straight edge punks, cuz theyre always getting into fights to prove themselves, are total preachy assholes. hardcore denies the existance of every other kind of punk. and im not even gonna touch the WP punks. theres to many of them. they should be kicked off the rictor scale.

any body wanna add on some for shit stupid labing subgenres?

There's also an assload of metal sub-genres, but they do have a purpose. If someone says "recommend me some thrash metal" then it's easy to give them what they're looking for. Now if they say, "recommend me some metal" it's a lot more broad and it's going to be hard to give them something they want. Now you could just say that this person might say instead, "recommend me some bands that sound like Slayer." Problem with that is, not everyone has heard Slayer, so they wouldn't know what to give him (I just used a well heard of band as an example, though this is not usually the case). There are some stupid sub-genres, I'll give you that, but there's also a good deal of them that serve a purpose.

OK nailz, that's just hilarious.

I just hope there isn't really a math metal subgenre. Of course, I could go for medical metal. I hear the dental plan is excellent.

Well, about half of the "sub-genres" on Nailz's list are made up and don't actually exist.

I keep wanting to give General Surgery a listen, but I have problems both finding their stuff and buying it in preference to all the other CDs I'm behind on.

And nailz, what about war metal? That was a real legitimate pretend black metal subgenre, with maybe like five whole bands spread between Norway and Belgium back in like 1996.

Some people say Tool is math metal/rock.
