What kind of AMVs do you avoid? With a twist.

Post by SarahtheBoring » Sun May 16, 2004 9:22 pm

I had been meaning to post this; the other thread just reminded me to get around to it. ;)

I think people tend to stick to their own particular corner of AMVs, watching whatever videos match their preexisting notions of what a series should be. Or maybe they avoid entire series, thinking that nothing good could ever be made from them. Which is all well and good, but I think everybody risks missing out on something they might like, simply because they don't bother to look around.

However, right over there *points randomly* is somebody who knows all about the corners of AMVs that you avoid. They know how to find the good stuff. They can get you to those few examples you might like, so you're not stuck watching the rest of the stuff to find the few gems.

So.

My idea is, here are the kinds of AMVs I avoid - which videos out of these do you think I should see?

#1. Mecha anime. I've watched a bunch of Evangelion videos, but other than that just about nothing.

#2. Standard romance videos. AMG and such. Cute, but after a while they all start to look the same to me.

#3. Horror vids. All I've seen are last year's VCA nominees.

So what would you suggest, those of you who like these types of vids?

And would anybody else care to play along? :)
Part 1 - What kind of AMVs do you rarely watch?
Part 2 - What are the must-sees for a newbie to this kind of AMV? And although people are gonna do it, at least plug somebody else's in addition to your own. X_x

I hope to find out some things I've been missing.

Part one:
I've got a personal policy or rarely watching any vid made from an anime I've not seen. For one, I find that being familiar with the anime helps with the vid a lot. For another, I don't want to run into unpleasent spoilers. (Like the way I had all of Lain spoiled for me several years ago. OK, that was mostly my fault. Whatever.)

Part two:
Mecha: There's a lot of Gundam work, and Nadesico also. Of course, with mecha, things are heavily dominated by Gundam and knockoffs thereof.

Romance: Um... Hm.... Yeah, AMG vids do get old. If you want something a little different, there's Crest of the Stars, which has a few good videos. Of course, romance videos all tend to have a lot of common elements. Just like romantic songs tend to have a lot of common elements.

Horror: I remember someone complaining that there aren't a lot of horror videos out there. Period. Maybe there's a not-so-subtle hint there...

Personally, if anyone wants to make a cyberpunky video, they need to watch this.[/url]

If you want to talk trailers, go look at Izumi's work. I think I need say no more there.

Oddly, I sometimes like watching AMVs for series I haven't seen - I usually don't mind spoilers, though. But if they're not spoiler-y, it's like a preview of the show, and that can be good. There are some that I've been inspired to watch by seeing AMVs made from them ("To Thee I Pray" had a hand in getting me to watch Descendants of Darkness, for example).

Any particular Gundam/Nadesico ones you can recommend? ^_^; I'm looking at the other ones recommended.

Thanks!

Actually.... Gundam (and all the variants thereof) is on the list of anime I've not seen. I've seen Nadesico, but no mecha vids come to mind at the moment. I do know, however, that they are out there. I just don't know any more (sorry).

I generally don't watch AMVs using animes I haven't seen either. Although, theoretically, a good AMV doesn't require knowledge of the anime in order to enjoy it, I find that an AMV like that is very difficult to find. I've become numb to spoilers though.

As far as your poll-thingy goes, I'd normally say mecha, but I have to say horror vids just for this one:

Hey,

I rarely dl' or watch AMVs nowadays, but when i do i just want something that I'll enjoy for a while or two. This means checking out the five-star list or the top-rated list. Other times when I'm curious about a specific creator, I'll download a set of their amvs and watch it. I consider myself a varied amv watcher, I'll dl' whatever strikes my fancy. I might not enjoy all of them, but they usually are interesting.

One specific group of amvs i stay away from and the realmedia encoded ones. I don't have the player installed so there's no use in dl'ing that format.

as for amv catergories, i find the horror genre to be plenty of rubbish. I'll download a few to watch every now and than but they'll be gone by the end of the week. I don't find them tasteful or particularly enjoyable beyond the initial views.

Heck..I'll play ^^

Mecha-
Gundam-South of the Border by Cyn

I usally don't watch alot of mecha stuff either..but this is one of the better ones I've found so far

SRV-
Hmm..well if you're looking for something a little off the beaten path of SRV's but still romance you might try these...These Angel Hearts by Cyanna it's a really good one IMHO..
Love Doesn't Have to Hurt by Venomi is a bit away from the SRV's as well..

Horror-
I can't say I've seen too many "good" ones myself..aside from the VCA ones.. ><

Now..on to the next half

Part 1-
I rarely watch Mecha...or an anime that I've not really seen because alot of the time you need to have an idea of what the anime's about to grasp the concept of the vid, unless the vids done well enough that it doesn't need the anime's backstory to help it along. Another would be game AMV's since there's only so much footage to use in so many ways..
Out of those ..I've already said the mecha one I've found that I like..so on to the not seen much of anime/never seen the anime ones..

Kusanagi and The Dude by Rozard Ghost in the Shell

The Organ Breakdown by TheNanashi Akira

As for the Game AMV's..the one's I've seen and liked well enough to keep would be these..
Heroes Of WarCraft by Devolution

Heh heh... I didn't realize SRV had become a genre itself. :)

But yeah, I really don't watch very much mecha, romance, or horror either, so I can't help you.

Except for saying that <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... >Alternate Reality is a really great horror video.

Horror: I consider "Faces of death" by Machine being the best horror ever made and it'll remain that way for quite some time. I don't care if others say the footage is to ridiculous and that it can't scare you. Bullshit, at least you get disgusted with some scenes. Check it out if you haven't already.

Romance: I avoid that genre to, so can't give any good suggestion.

Mecha: Same. Except Robotech, Macross and Granzort I haven't seen any other mecha anime. I might suggest "Everyday" by Metro since it's so far the only Macross video I liked.

Any other good Macross stuff?
