I Don't know where to put this so here it goes. FTP Help

Post by Nekoboy Sal » Sun May 16, 2004 11:02 am

I can not for the life of me get my AMV up. I'm using cuteFTP. I only get so far, maybe 5-10% then server disconect or whatever (It doesn't help to have "Eircom" as an ISP - 3Kb/s!). I have to disconect from the internet to reconect to the server. Another 2-4% goes by, then disconect. Recoect 2-3%, disconect. I repeat the process till I get to about 20% overall. Then It just won't connect anymore! WHY! I try again the next day and my username and password have expired, or whatever happens to them. Help.

I'v been thinking. If I can connect to someone thew Yahoo or MSN, I can get them my AMV thew file transphere (maybe an hour or so), then I can give them the the server to connect to and they can upload it for me. Is that leagal? And would anyone be crazy enough to accept my proposel?

Help

well, if you did it, and you're talking about local, you'd probably have to get them to list it themselves or give them collab credit, or your password. None of which would be very desireable.

Note I won't do this myself.

However, if you really can't get it to work at your place, you could burn it to a CD and try at a friend's place, or something.

I don't have any friends  Well non of witch have internet capabilities better than mine. Actually one of them has Highspeed, but its down till he understands what a firewall is. I could probably fix it, but I'v never been to his house. Being in Irland all your friends are no where near you.

Anyway, I don't know the diffrence from Local to Direct. I acctualy don't know what they are at all.

does the video use anime video source? if not, i think the donut won't let you upload non-anime videos. otherwise, it might be your isp. bubblehead's suggestion of uploading it from a friend's house sounds good. if not a friend's house, try the library or school.

a local link is one that links to a video stored on the server (the golden donut) provided by this website. a direct link is one that links to a video stored on another server (like if you have your own domain, or an angelfire or geocities account).

Thanks for the Dirct and Indirct explanation. I thought Direct was sumtin like that.

Anyway, I would have to install FTP sofware on someone elses computer, and the school doesn't have a library, per say. In the computer lab the internent is usualy only enabaled for a sertain modual (we're doing then internet and mailing modual this week! *WTF will I learn in that?!*). She won't let us use disks from outside the class room for fear of Virus. Sides, I'm not an administrater on the school's comuters to install CuteFTP.

I just remembered! My uncle has Highspeed! I'd have to get the Mac version of an FTP, but I can do it! Now I have to work up the guts to ask.

Windows has a built in ftp command. You need to get to the DOS command line (there should be a Command Prompt icon somewhere in the Start Menu.) CD to the directory your video is in, then type "ftp <server>", enter the username and password when asked and then use the appropriate command (can't remember if it's send or put) to send/put the video via FTP. No extra software needed, but it's not as pretty as FTPExplorer et al :P (After typing that, I just remembered newer versions of Internet Explorer also let you do FTP, try typing "ftp://<user>:<password>@<server>" as the address then dragging and dropping the file - this might also work on a Mac, not sure though.)

If you're willing to retry from home again, try getting SmartFTP instead - it resumes great for me. If you're on dial-up, make sure you disconnect the other phone line (the one to the telephone) before you connect - that will get you about twice the connection speed by default. Make sure to copy and paste the log-in info into a notepad file so you won't lose it. The actual information doesn't expire for 2 days (last I checked), but you can't see it again on the website, so you'll need to write it down somewhere to keep if you need it again. The best way to upload a vid on dial-up is to do it overnight when you can stay up and watch it (or catch it if it disconnects). If your ftp *does* disconnect and stop uploading, don't close the ftp client, just reconnect your internet and hit the 'upload' again (using smartftp) - if it doesn't connect to the server immediately, then it's the org, not your connection, just keep trying.

As for having someone else upload it, that's fine. Just change your account password to something general, give it to the person you transferred the file to, let him or her upload it, then, when it's up, change your password back. You don't have to worry about that person doing anything to your account since they never found out your 'real' password. Of course, if you have someone nice do it, that wouldn't be an issue anyway. I'd volunteer, but I'm on dial-up as well, and it takes longer for an aim transfer than it does to upload or download a local vid for me. Your best bet would be to send it to someone with a modem or high speed connection - it might take a while to send it to him, but he can upload it in less than an hour.

[And I didn't see it mentioned, but this should have gone in the 'Site Help' section - that's for general questions. ^.~ ]

Why bother? You're better off using Cygwin or something for the FTP client in that. It's more flexible, after all.

Yay! I got on my uncle's iMac :) I put up the FTP software :D I had to install OS X :? I got it running :D OS X was already instaled?! :x Uploading Video now :P No connection detected  Can't get back to OS 9  I'm screwed! Fixed it :? Quit. :|

That is a huge simplification of what took place during those horide sucky suck 3 hours. I didn't even get my Vid up

Okay. Friday 21 May, 20:00 Irish time. I will be waiting for someone to contact me to get my vid up. I have had it with this suck!

This is the lay down. Using MSN or Yahoo, we will meet online. We will talk for a while about what were doing but my Idea is this.
1. I file transphere my Video (12.5 MB) over an estimated 75 minetes at about 3Kb/s.
2. I will get permition from the Org to upload.
3. I will relay: the server name, user name, password to get the file to the server.
4. You will upload MY FILE "WAKE up"
5. We'll talk about the weather.
6. I might go to sleep and wake up the next moring.
7. I will confirm the upload.
7.5 If the Vid is broken, I may snap and give up. If the vid is alright I will go extatic!
8. I will write a nice little thank you on my vid discription.

If you don't live in Irland (I know you don't) I have some time equivelents here.
New York 15:00
Los Angeles 12:00
Yokyo (you never know) 4:00
Helsinki 22:00

Remember its my first Video, and it means alot to me. I'm not exacatly expecting a reply to this. But it would be nice. Until tomorrow I may try to upload all night and screw my self over for school tomorrow.

Thanks for your time.
I give up.

To those who thinks he needs to play around with passwords on his account for security: you're wrong. All the uploader would need is the login/password for the FTP server which is not a big deal. The absolute worse way he could be screwed is if someone uploaded a wildly wrong video under his name and even it doesn't matter because he has the ability to download and check the video as the final step. There are no security concerns here for him. All he needs is someone nice enough to do it. I'd volunteer myself but I'm usually at work the time he listed and ftp is a big no-no there.
