Pimpingest AMV Machine

Post by Shadow Flare » Fri May 14, 2004 2:52 pm

I attended two LAN parties last weekend, and the first was a 'Bring-your-own-comp' thing. The LAN dudes had set up a network that allowed everyone to share their files, so about a thousand AMV's appeared on the list. Took me 30 minutes to copy half of them down.

Anyways, some guy in the top row had a computer that was like 5 cubic feet, translucent coating, 8 fans on the outside, green lights glowing everywhere, and a looooooud humming sound.

I asked him what kind of comp it was, and he replied it was a custom-built Athlon. When I asked him how many gigs he had, he replied '1250', RAM as somewhere in 8000. He said he used it to edit DVD's and trade AMV's.

What's the most impressive AMV machines that you guys have seen?

That's not "impressive," that's just silly. There's no way a desktop computer can make use of eight gigs of RAM, and 1.25 terabytes of storage is best used in a separate file server - not in the desktop computer itself. :)

Wouldn't that depend on the OS? I know, off the top of my head, that some computers run on more than that.

Besides, a bit of research turns up this. In short, a properly compiled Linux kernel with the right hardware can support up to 64 GB of RAM. Of course, I think that's with an outdated kernel version....

Probably, but not everyone wants to have to connect to a different machine to have all their files handy.

But then, it being 5 cubic feet with a translucent coating and green lights glowing everywhere is also pretty silly.

My computer has lots of memories on it! And the gigs are really fast! Also, if I overclock it, my DDR RAM can get an AAA on MaxxUnlimited!
I have no idea how to use this new forum.
