Millennium Actress (WHAT the **** was THAT?!?)

Post by EvaXephon » Tue May 11, 2004 10:46 am

I need help. I need help pulling this giant d*** out of my ear. How did it get there? Millenium Actress mind-f***ed me. >=(

I liked Perfect Blue. I liked how we never really knew what was going on, because right when everything is explained, they go and mess it up again. But I didn't like Millennium Actress.

When I saw Kill Bill, I thought of this film. In KB, they do crazy stuff, like make the screen go red and play weird music, and make everything suddenly go black and white for no reason, show a lil' 3-D plane moving on a 3-D map to show that the character is flying to a different place, and play this crazy whistle music. In the second movie, the main character actually mentions what critics said about the film! What the heck? I can't believe that Quentin Tarantino actually got away with doing all of those weird things.

I feel the same way about Satoshi Kon. Why the heck did they let him get away with making his movie the way he did? I'll go into detail about whta I didn't like below. I really don't think it's that much of a 'spoiler' though.
It starts out simply enough. The actress' childhood. She meets a guy and finds a key. Then, she becomes an actress. She searches for the guy. But then we find out that the scenes where she was searching for the guy were actually filmed. So, was she really searching, or was that just what her movies were about? This stupid stuff continues throughout the whole film. And the people interviewing her are able to interact with her memories...what the fudge? What was going on? Even the fricken' camera guy didn't know.
I hope that someone who has seen it feels the same way, or can explain to me what the heck happened. Maybe you're not supposed to reason with the film, just watch it, because since it makes no sense, trying to understand it would only ruin it. Is that so?

It's been a while since I saw it, so anyone can correct me if I am wrong ^^
She got the job staring in movies, one of the cast kept lying to her about where that one gentleman went so that she would forget about him. Leading her across the country doing films, in her mind she was chasing this 'man' through all of her films.

Since it was an interview, and to help the audience, the two guys were able to be "in" her story while she was recalling her past. This let's you know you are watching her past not following it... if that makes sense.

Notice towards the end when she finally gets word of where that 'man' was; she wanted to see him, running, chasing, like she had in all her movies to find him/catch up with him. I believe it goes through each movie and always comes back to what she was doing in real life. I thought that part was an awesome climax as well as an incredible sequence planned by the director. It fit so well.
Anyways, I hope I'm not wrong and I hope it helps clear a few things up

Ever since I saw Perfect Blue (and wrote an essay on it for a feminism class I took) I've wanted to see Millenium Actress.

So is it licensed yet?
Another pointless post!

Wait, you said Dreamworks? Like the same one that released all those American movies? Wow.
Another pointless post!

First off EvaXephon, you are very dense.

And to answer you, her life parallels her films and vice versa. And I hope Rhyelvaln's answer was able to help you out a little bit more.

Also, I pity you that you weren't able to grasp this amazing film.

I'd rather be dense than be a mean person. I'd rather be dead than be a mean person.

Yes. Rhyelvaln's answer did help to explain the film to me a lot. I didn't feel like saying that, however, because I felt humbled.

What he said.

If you need everything spelled out to you literally, why are you watching anime? It's pretty common to leave things unexplained.

Never, ever watch Serial Experiments Lain. You'd be lost in the first two seconds. ;)
