TJWAR: The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Post by Tsunami Jones » Mon May 10, 2004 7:14 pm

Hey all, depending on how I feel, this will probably be the only review that I feel like dong this week. So here it is!

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (spoilers = light)

Justy Ueki Tylor, age twenty, just wants to live an easy life. And what better place to find an easy life than the military? You can just deliver pension checks everyday until you retire, at which you’ll get paid a pension yourself for the rest of your life! And amazingly enough, Tylor is assigned to the pension department. What a lucky guy! But things soon change for him. One day, one of the pension checks was forgotten about and wasn’t sent in the mail, so Tylor decides to deliver it personally. The highly decorated veteran of war however, ends up being held hostage by terrorists. And unfortunately for the terrorists, Tylor saves the day, and as a reward, is promoted to the position of captain, and given the good ship Soyokaze (Gentle Breeze)!

So that’s pretty much how the series begins. Our good friend Tylor is put in charge of a spaceship, and right as full-scale war with an alien empire is about to break out. Not necessarily the “easy” life in the pension department that Tylor wanted, but Tylor takes it in his “stride” and gets to it . . . kinda. Tylor is easily the best thing about this show. Very few characters can meet, or even get close to how likeable he is, and no other character I’ve seen has such of a “happy-go-lucky” attitude for life. The best way I could describe Tylor is from what Crispin Freeman (who is the voice actor for Tylor in the dub; and even besides that, many of you might recognize him the titanic amount of other characters that he’s played) said a year or two back when I saw him at NDK. He said, “It’s like putting Winnie-the-Pooh in charge of a spaceship.” And I’m simply going to leave it at that, and go onto how the other characters are.

The rest of the characters in the show all have rather rich personalities and characteristics that are seldom found. From Tylor’s crew to the members of the Holy Raalgon Empire, all are rather deep, and all definitely increase the enjoyment of the show. I especially enjoy how they all react to Tylor’s “strange” decisions, all of which are absolutely hilarious.

The animation in the show is good, the only thing about it I don’t like is that in certain places I think that they should have used a little bit brighter colors than the ones they did, but that’s a very minor complaint. The music, is also pretty good, but it’s still far from outstanding.

There’s only one real big problem I have with the show. In the middle of it, do to certain events that occur, Tylor becomes a very melancholic character. I believe that this, in a way, completely changes part of the pace of the show, and to me, it was a change for the worse. It thankfully doesn’t last the entire show however, which I am very thankful for.

Now, I’m rather biased against dubbing. I generally can’t stand it. The script and english cast for Tylor however, has done a very good job. The script is accurate, and all of the voice actors (included among them are Crispin Freeman and Lisa Ortiz), are very well cast, and do a great job of keeping the feel of the show.

So I give The Irresponsible Captain Tylor 4.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a wonderful series to see and to own. It’s decently affordable, as it spans a total of seven DVDs. The first four are the TV series, which, last time I checked, can only be aquired together in a box set. The last three DVDs (the OVAs), can be purchased either individually, or in a nicely discounted box set.

Tylor is one of my favourites for sure. Reminds me a lot of McHale's Navy humour.
