I know a few people who like to bash people who are into "mainstream" anime because they feel that it means they aren't real anime fans. But isn't mainstream anime what introduces a lot of people to anime? I was never a fan of Yugioh or Pokemon, but a lot of my friends were. When I was in third grade, EVERY girl in my class loved Sailor Moon. Do any of them watch anime now? Nope. I'm the only member of Ms. Vega's third grade class who still watches the stuff. But who cares? I think it's great that a lot more anime has gotten mainstream. It makes it easier to get at and cheaper as well. Isn't that a good thing?

If you base your identity as a person around what clothes you wear, what shows you watch, or anything else as superficial as that, I happen to think you're an idiot. But then, most people grow out of that eventually. Half of me wants to punch them for being asshats, and the other half wants to pat them on the head and pinch their cheeks. "Awww. 'I'm a rebel! grrr!' How cute!"

I've only known a few anime before they became 'mainstream' - aka licensed/aired/available. But I feel the same way about those anime that I did when I first watched them. I have my own reasons for loving each anime that I deem one of my favorites - and no matter how many others find it, no matter why they like or dislike it, that doesn't change *me*. I'm not the sort of person who can be swayed from liking something so easily - because I don't decide I like something unless there is solid reason for me to. I'm not fickle, in other words. I still enjoy Sailormoon - how sad is that? Not very sad to me. In fact, I think it's great that I can still enjoy the anime for the very same reason I liked it to begin with - it's sweet, fun, and refreshing - it works as a nice break from all the angsty/action packed or comedic fanservice anime I tend to be around. It has its own charm, and while I don't love it as much now (since I do have others that appeal to me in a similar way), I haven't stopped liking what I first enjoyed about it.
The only time I stop enjoying an anime is if I burn myself out on it - that has nothing to do with how many 'dumb' fanboys or girls run around embarrassing everyone who likes that anime. It's something I do to myself. The only person who can change my 'likes' and dislikes is me. I guess I'm just too self-concerned to care if others like 'my' anime or not - it's still mine for the very same connection that I had before everyone and his brother discovered it. It's not like me suddenly disowning a very close friend just because she made it on some celebrity search and suddenly becomes an idol for the masses. People change, but an anime doesn't, a book doesn't - the only thing that can change is how you look at it. If you're that quick to change your mind, you never liked it to begin with - *you* were the one following a fad, it was just a private fad. Real 'fans' don't drop an anime just because someone else enjoys it as well.
[And yes, I know at least one amv maker who thinks this way - he's very open about hating 'mainstream crap' and refuses to watch anything that has been licensed and 'dumbed' or 'dirtied' by the fans - not the dubbers, the fans. That's fickle elitism to me, but you can't help that. People who are so quick to change their minds will do it on a whim. And a lot of them can't imagine being any different - that's just the way they view things.]

Makes me think of all those "punks" who suddenly emerged after Good Charlotte and Avril became cool...punks who were NSYNC fans a week earlier (literally)....SarahtheBoring wrote:If you base your identity as a person around what clothes you wear, what shows you watch, or anything else as superficial as that, I happen to think you're an idiot. I tried to get everyone turned on to anime in high school. When my classes had free days, I brought some anime (DBZ) to watch. The "popular" girls thought that watching the anime was childish and bashed it immediately. I told them there were anime with better plots, but I been watching Japanese DBZ, since I was 4 and it's my favorite. Only the "Geeks" in my class watch it with me. I ran track all through high school and now, so was not the sterotypical anime fan. I was known as a "jock", I saw my self as Andre'. Later that day, I had a mission, to get my whole class into anime. They started to ask me questions and I schooled them about. They realized that you don't have to be a geek to enjoy anime because I was an athlete. The class eventually sat down and watch it with me except for two girls. I wore DBZ shirts and everything b/c I wasn't afraid to admit that I'm an otaku. I played DBZ tapes before my football games and they loved. Unfortunatley, one man can't do it all. Sorry for the long story, so

Makes me think of people who look down on those people, thinking they're somehow more punk, when they're also rich white kids in the suburbs who think their parents are LIKE OMG TOTALLY EVIL AND STUFF.ryuu_hime13 wrote: Makes me think of all those "punks" who suddenly emerged after Good Charlotte and Avril became cool...punks who were NSYNC fans a week earlier (literally)....

*sigh!* MajinCanty, I wish there were at least one person at my school that would do half as much! I'm not a jock, and there's alot of drama and other things that happened this year, but excuses aside, I wish that I had done as much for my school...my ex-gf probably didn't know 1/8 of what I was into when it cane to anime, which is a mistake I'm working very hard on not making with my new one...anyhow, I'm also not a jock, just another "band kid," even though I have some recognition in my ability to play, and our band has won big over the last few years, it still doesn't get the credit it deserves. *Sigh!* Oh well, we'll see how college turns out!

You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

To the original topic posting.
Well some people just like to do things that are different.
I personally think it is silly to let others make your decisions for you though. ( Your decisions as in the people you wrote the post about not as is in actually yours.)
For MajinCanty:
Don't feel to bad MajinCanty computers used to be for 'geeks' only. Who were ridiculed for it.
Now everyone has a high tech cell phone or PDA with internet, lights, buttons, and optional ass scratcher. Some people are just beyond their time. Like Andy Caughman.
