Manga vs anime - a not so instant poll.

Given the many references that I see comparing the manga of a given series to the episodes, I decided to take a look at some.

Unsurprisingly a hit and miss adventure. One thing that I did notice right away was how damm much it costs! Sure... there are uh.. outlets for getting inexpensive copies, scanlations, CD scan compilations and so forth, but I like actually having a book in my hand. Plus, it's only another method of bootleg, thus driving up price even more.

I have Three questions, answer anyway you wish.

1) Who 'cheats' and reads some of the books in the book store?
.....I see a lot of people doing it, and wondered how common it is.

2) What is considered to be the pinnacle of manga?
.....(this being what you would reccomend to someone who has never read it.) You could call is synonymous with reccomending something like Akira, or Laputa to someone who has never seen anime.

3) The cheater two part question: What anime did you like better than the manga, and conversly what manga did you like better.

I don't want to bias the responses, so I'll chime in when/if a few people have posted.

1) I tend to read the first couple pages, just to get a feel for the book before I buy it. I don't like it by the end of the first chapter, I won't buy it (possibly borrow, though)

2) Hmm, hard decision as I haven't read too many mangas (just Kenshin, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, Chobits and GitS). I'd recommend FMA, though. It's got a dark plot but a lot of really funny parts as well.

3) Manga I liked better than the anime: Kenshin (after the show strays majorly from the manga after the Kyoto arc)

Show I liked better than the manga: FLCL (I couldn't even read the first 4 pages)

I may read at most an entire volume of manga in a store. Usually I'm not even reading the entire thing but just skimming through it. If I really like it though, I'll buy it. Although there's a ton of translated manga available on store shelves these days, the companies seem to be paying more attention to quantity than quality.

1)I also just read the first pages, take a look at the pictures and if I like them (I like it, when they seem very realistic) I buy it.

2)Mangas I read and I really like: Bronze-Zetsuai (It´s a Shonen Ai. Mostly females like it

) , Battle Angel Alita (really nice battle scenes), Vagabond (the story of the Samurai Miamoto Musashi, very realistic pictures, my favorite)

1) Reading material at the book store is a very common occurance, don't be surpised at all, especially at the big super bookstore/coffeeshop such as Barnes & Nobles or Borders. The even provide comfy couches in said stores as does Tower Records. At the Walden Books that I used to go to, they had a concaved rail for your ass to lay on to make standing easier while you're reading a magazine or book. The act can range anywhere from novels to magazines. Hell, I read through a book on Che Guevara once in the store. The people didn't mind... but then again, it was in one of those large stores.

2) When I comes to beginner manga readers, I suppose the rules are the same as those applied to beginner anime viewers. Dragonball and Sailormoon are potential choices since they aren't offensively graphic and still pertain to the childish mind. Ranma series is also a winner.

3) Most mangas I've read, I liked better than the anime. Akira, Lupin, Yu Yu Hakusho, GTO, Ghost In the Shell, X, 3X3 Eyes, and Appleseed are the ones I can think of right now[/b]

I never kno if i should buy a new manga unless i hear a lot of good things about it....so usually i browse through it in the bookstore....

The only "new" manga i've ever bought that i have never heard about was Mineko Ohkami's "Dragon Knights" - and now i'm totally hooked on it

( btw, i truely reccomend it to anyone who's into bishonen, fantacy and comedy!)

overall, the only animes i truely prefer over manga is flcl (it's so twisted

) and Houshin Engi (the manga just sounds so complicated and depressing)

1.) If I'm completely broke or have time to kill then I'll read manga in the store.

2.) Blade of the Immortal. I would sacrifice my other manga series to save my Blade of the Immortal volumes. Dead serious

. I highly reccomend this manga to everyone. Tis good series and needs more publicity.

Part 1: Maybe Fruits Basket, but to tell you the truth, (from what I've read) they both seem to compliment each other. Like the show elaborates on one point in the story that the manga didn't and visa versa.
Yu Yu Hakusho. The show filters a lot of boring stuff out. Or at least boring in my opinion

Part 2: Samurai Deeper Kyo and Project Arms ( own too many mangas and have seen too many animes).

1. I've never read through a manga/book/magazine in a store. I'll pick it up, read the back/description, if it appeals to me I buy.

2. It depends entirely on what genres people like. It's impossible to have an unbiased answer.

3. Most of the manga titles I have, I prefer over the anime. The exception being perhaps, Excel Saga, since you can do so much more in the anime than the manga, that's a whole matter of style though.

Not really. Depending on what volume you're reading Sailor Moon can get rather graphic. And depending on how you view certain the allusions in the manga could be offensive...but then again you'd have to known what they are alluding to in the first place...some stuff might go right over people's heads if you gave the books to younger teens. Hmm. I suppose it depends on the age of the beginner, and how easily offended (for the youngens, what they can handle w/o freaking out). You wouldn't want to give a high schooler tokyo mew mew (or at least I wouldn't think you'd want to) but at the same time you don't want to give a elementry kid Battle Royale.

It also depends on attention span and interests.

I have only read one complete manga series, which was Ranma1/2 and it took a while to get all books. I prefer anime simply because its easier to obtain for me in this country.
It also requires less engrosement and time than a good manga series. I like manga very much nd if i had the time and income, i would move heaven and earth to get a book...............but alas that is not the case and anime just gives me just enough visiual treats to keep my Otakun hunger satisfied.
