Question about a certain effect...

Post by Akulious » Thu Apr 29, 2004 6:53 am

The white quick phase effect. I've seen it used on numerous action videos and am wondering "how the hell can I do that!?"

I'm using Windows Movie Maker 2.0 and I just can't seem to find any option like that - none. Closest thing is a fade white. Perhaps that is how they do it?

Please, I would like to make my next video that much tighter :)
I couldn't come up with anything, so....uh...yea, my signature.

White flashes are generally done by inserting a 2-frame white matte on top of the video. I do it slightly fancier and fade a white matte 2 frames up and 3 frames down, YMMV. Some people also use black and grey mattes in combination with white mattes. From what I know, WMM might not offer you that level of fine tuning you'd need to drop the white matte exactly on beat...

Too bad there are no mattes in WMM...

You can work around it in WMM by fading into a white image quickly and fading out quickly. Just fade it on beat.

You can do it in VirtualDub. Import the clip in Vdub and save yourself a white bmp picture file at the right size (go to 'file' 'properties' to see the size of your footage). Then add the effect - video, filters, and the 'logo' filter. Make it a little transparent so it's not a bold white flash, and save the part you want to flash in your vid. If you save it to huffyuv it should be fine.

If you have something other than mspaint, you can use a tga file instead. But with a simple white picture it shouldn't matter.

Hmm....seems I can't import my file into VirtualDub at all :(

Microsoft had to do with it

Is it a video 1 avi file or wmv? If so, you can use an avisynth script to open it in VirtualDub - just use something like this:

DirectShowSource("C:\wild-wmm-aud.wmv",fps=29.97)

If you don't know anything about avisynth, check that section of the guides. They explain in great detail. ^.^

Or we could just use the KISS rule... In WMM slice your video at the beat you want by placing the line there and slicing (Ctrl-L). Then insert a White bitmap you made in MS Paint, drag the out point of the white BMP down to as small as it will go (usually .7 or .14 of a second ), and the move the in point of your following clip by the amout your BMP takes up.

Boom, white flashes.
