Legend of Zelda Cartoons = Anime?

Post by Rorschach » Sat Apr 17, 2004 2:51 am

This just occurred to me in the thread where I was discussing anime based on video games: might the Legend of Zelda cartoons that came out so long ago actually be dubbed anime? I noticed the character's voices seem strained as if they'd been distorted, and that Link makes some suggestive comments about Zelda at one point that wouldn't usually pass muster with the Saturday cartoon censors here in America. Also, there are 13 episodes, a typical half-season.

Anyone think there's an original Japanese version out there that might be cooler?

In my research I have only found American names connected to the acting, directing and writing of the Legend of Zelda TV show. Although I can't be completly sure because its filed in with Captain N, and Mario Bros cartoons. ALthough I dont' think it was ever an anime.

Actually, somebody here did a video to the Legend of Zelda, so I *suppose* it is considered anime here:

I'd just like to take this time and say:

System of a Down DID NOT do that song.

A little known group called The Rabbit Joint did. Someone mislabeled the song and there has been confusion since.

You can get the song free and LEGAL from this site.

No, the old zelda cartoon is not anime.

The Zelda cartoon wasn't anime, but it might as well be. It was a really different type of cartoon back then because of their relationship. If i remember right, Link kept on hitting and making advances on Zelda while she would either insult him or just ignore his antics.

I believe that the Legend of Zelda series and Captain N were both made by the guys at DiC. If you are able to find any episodes for either of these shows, I suggest checking them out. Great late 80s cartoon fun at its best.

I have vague memories of both of these shows, but the reoccuring gag for Legend of Zelda that kept going was when Link kept asking Zelda for a kiss and the ways his proposal totally backfired on him.
Two examples: After recovering from a spell that either turned him into a frog or gave him the mind of a frog ( I can't remember that well), Link asks for the kiss since Zelda helped him out. Zelda figures why not, and just as their lips are about to connect, a fly passes Links head. As a reflex, Link grabs the fly, eats it and spits it out.
Link: Yuck! Why did I do that?
Zelda: Eww! I'm not going to kiss you now!
Other example: After saving the king from Ganon, who was looking for him and the Triforce, Link had been congradulated and thanked by Zelda and the king. So what does Link want as a reward?
Link: Well, how about a kiss? (closing his eyes in a proud way, waiting for Zelda to plant one on him)
King: (totally not getting what Link is hinting at) Alright. (kisses him on the cheek).
Link: Aww man! That's not what I meant!
Zelda and King: (laughing histerically).
Probably too busy to be here right now.
