Discrimination

Post by Fungie½ » Tue Apr 06, 2004 4:36 pm

I'm not sure if anyone had ever brought this topic up but I was wondering if this had happened to anybody...

Have any of the AMV creators here been discriminated for any reason whatsoever? It could be that you used an obscure source or a "horrible" song in their tastes. Has anyone been discriminated against for the way they act on the forums? Has anyone ever been at a convention and been made fun of in public for some random reason?

The reason I'm bringing this up is because recently I was made fun of because of the fact that I am a bisexual, and I received a rather cruel e-mail in relation to my "Gravity" and "Mikako's Hope" videos. To sum it up, they asked why I had done a video about a straight couple (i.e. Mikako's Hope) when I could've "done another fag video to show at the gay bar" (i.e. Gravity). Immediately after reading it, I laughed and realized "I'm not even old enough to go to a bar!" I politely wrote back and said that my videos are done because of my interest in the anime and/or song, not because the anime(s) are of a homosexual nature. I've yet to hear back. Though I didn't take it to heart, it did kinda hurt the way I felt about my AMVs...

No, you're not alone. I may not be homosexual, but I can say that if you make yaoi amvs, you're going to get flames because of it - from the homophobic fanboys (the only exception would be comic vids, like Zarxrax's where he did it as a spoof of something he didn't like, and was sure to mention that in the vid description). I don't think forum presence has anything to do with it - my flamers have assumed that I'm a gay guy, so I doubt they even come to the forums [for those who don't know, I'm a het female]. That's just the way things are in predominantly straight male communities like this one, especially preadolescent males.

One thing I would say is that I'm surprised how much worse it is here than it was in the many fanfic communities and forums I frequent. Even fanfiction.net, where most members are under 15. I've gotten more flames (reviews and emails) since joining this site than I have in over six years of writing fanfiction. I guess editors are more protective and anti than writers are. Or age really doesn't make people more intelligent.

Regardless, in a community where you can be publically attacked in a review without the administrators lifting a finger - you should expect to get private flames as well. Why shouldn't they flame? By all appearances, it's accepted on the site, so it's accepted from the members/visitors of that site.

Ever since I did that vid, my nick has become synnonomous with "gay" on IRC :(

Oh, don't let it get to you. Everyone will always try to transpose their own views on anime, music, and everything else onto your video. It's sad but true that people tend to look at the world through their own tinted lens and judge everything by their own measures.

Unbiased viewers? It's rare. That's why the best that the 'special interest' creators can usually do is use their videos to appeal to limited groups and just try to ignore others...

And when it comes to something completely unrelated, people judging you on your previous videos which have nothing to do with the current one - well, yet again... it's a repercussion of your choice in direction and a certain person's biased world view. Again, something that shouldn't reasonably happen but does - but when did we live in a reasonable world?

*sigh*

Just make AMV's and enjoy what you do. That's about all that's possible. And usually, that's more than enough anyway.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Actually, it's because fanfiction sites don't allow flames. Constructive criticism? Sure. Flames? No. They reprimand repeat offenders instead of ignoring them. Readers have a reason not to attack. Viewers don't.

I've found that the best way to deal with email regarding AMVs of any nature is to just ignore it. A few months ago, I decided to flag any email related to my AMVs as spam, because I just don't care to care.

It's nice to not have to deal with what viewers think.

All the time.

I would usually get the occasional "Stop with the jpop shit". Hell, even a few people on this forum have told me that.

I'm just too stubborn to listen. I suck for not giving into peer pressure.
