I wasn't bashing the series, I was bashing the attempt at the movie...Also, I sadly agree with what you said later, that we American's (especially after 9-11) tend to be self-centered. Particularly the way we steal a forieng story and "Americanize" it. That's part of what I was ranting about originally when I said that it was insulting (disrespectful) to change the charachter names/looks like that. What worries me most is that mainstream film here seems to have the idea that people will be completely un-receptive to a story just because it has foreing charachters or setting (which is what fuels this bullshit). Its sad really, Hollywood is unwilling to give people a chance to recieve Eva (and other things) as it really is, and after this whole recent surge of excessive patriotism, people are less likely to care.Tidus_F_F_X wrote:NOOOOOO, what's happening here, sooo much Eva bashing, leave the poor series alone, it didn't do anything to hurt anyone, it was just trying to help. Think the Ring adaptation. Only much worse.
Sure it'll have cool special effects and all, but only a tiny thread of the original plot will make it through.
I sure hope they do something to rectify the many wrongs they have created.
One thing got me thinking: do the movie (or any entertainment industry people) ever, I mean EVER, look at message boards?
C'mon, instant fan response.
At the very least they could see what would be tolerable of the primary audience.
The Big O will KILL you!

I believe you're half-right. Yes, Americans are self-centered, but what other nation isn't? Trust me that most people have strong feelings about their native country and that they deem other countries to be inferior. The reason a lot of people see America as an arrogant nation is because of the amount of exposure in the media. You can't watch the news without seeing something about this country. I watch the foriegn news on the International Channel and there's always something on this country. And just like you, it irritates me when a foreign film is picked up by Hollywood and is given an overhaul for the American public, which results in a totally different product lacking the appeal of the original and ending up abandoning the original fans, but attracting the mainstream audience at the same time.Skyshroud wrote:I wasn't bashing the series, I was bashing the attempt at the movie...Also, I sadly agree with what you said later, that we American's (especially after 9-11) tend to be self-centered. However, Hollywood isn't the only place where they make adaptations of other works. Most of us know that the Ring is the Hollywood version of Ringu from Japan, but Ringu the film itself was adapted from a book of the same title. And I liked the Ring better, I just thought the story flowed better than Ringu. If you've ever seen Kuosawa's Throne of Blood, then you'd probably have realized that it's just a feudal Japan version of Macbeth. Years ago, I've once viewed a French version of Three Men and a Baby. But I suppose the reason why Hollywood cranks out the adaptations so much more than other places is probably because America has possibly the largest movie going public in the world.
As for 9-11, I believe it was right for people to feel patriotic. I think it was more of a wake-up call for the people to realize that living in this country more than they originally thought was worth. I mean we have the Food Network. In underdeveloped countries, that channel is practically pornagraphy. Of course, I'm not sayign to hate another nation. In fact, if anyone should be hated, it should be the higher-ups running our country for not admitting their mistakes and for being so damn evasive on issues that they can't answer.
On another note, on Bum's sig... is it just me or does that eva looks like something from the Zerg species of Starcraft?

Hmmm...how can I put this...Tidus_F_F_X wrote:Out of business, please, that company is swimming in the green ocean, especially in comparison to other anime companies. What with sales of the series itself, then merchandise, clothing, "How to" books, costumes, my friends, it's crazy... like a pineapple!
Does Squaresoft ring any bells? Did you know it's now known as Square-Enix because of lost profits on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within? At least, that's what I've heard...

Umm.... ok thats only a rumor and you fell for it. Im like one of the biggest Final Fantasy fans ever and I'm 99.999% sure Square merged with Enix because they bought them out. If you notice there used to be a company Enix with the logo E and now they are a subgroup of square which is why they use the squaresoft logo. Also im pretty sure the merger took place BEFORE the movie was actually in theatres.Lone Wolf wrote:Hmmm...how can I put this...Tidus_F_F_X wrote:Out of business, please, that company is swimming in the green ocean, especially in comparison to other anime companies. 1. As of recently a member of the forum has put up a sig that links to a Live action eva fansite. In the facts section it states that it was announced the movie will be based off the first few episodes of the series. It can only be assumed that if it does well the story line will continue with a sequel.
2. New concept art has also been released with pictures of "Ray"'s face. You can't expect the characters to look exactly the same however. I was kind of hoping for a blue haired, red eyed, paled skin character but in the end that would just be hokey.
3. As for the name changes it had to be done. Unless you wanted to read subtitles it just wouldnt make sense having japanese named people talking english. Which is another reason why Dubs are so odd....
4. I don't think anyone is really expecting a great movie based off the EVA story line. It will most certaintly not be as strong of a story line in order to appeal to the wider audience. The least you can expect is some cool special effects with giant robots fighting.
Just dont get your hopes up
