I thought that was his point. If you have cliff's notes, of course you don't need to read the actual thing. You read the cliff's notes. But that doesn't mean there's no point reading the cliff's notes. And I'm not saying your posts are filled with redundant or needless info, but they can be pretty intimidating to glance at. Thusly, sometimes I end up just skipping over half of them. :?

Anyway, let's not derail the thread, guys.

I normally don't pay much attention to the video description unless I am reviewing it. I base my enjoyment of the video solely on the viewing experience and don't give much credence to the description if I'm just doing casual downloading/watching. Reviewing is different though since I need to understand what the creator was going for in order to give a detailed opinion of where I felt they succeeded or fell short.

That's exactly how I do it - after the fact. ^_^

In reviewing a vid I'll watch it first, then read the vid description and watch it again (knowing what to look for). It's much easier to do that with people who do the "Read after watching" sections in their descriptions, but as long as I watch the video at least once with no influence, I can get that first impression. I don't think I've ever liked a video more (or disliked it) after knowing why it was made and what story is behind it. That's just interesting info to explain where people get their ideas.

I'm just going to answer the question...

Motivation, the reason why I ever FINISH an amv...
If I'm 110% certain that the final product won't get all 1's and can quite possibly be something I'll love watching, then I pretty much "turbo charge" through the editing process...

Though some people love editing, I REALLY hate it. *abhor* is a better term. Sheesh, to move little blocks of footage here and there and then to meticulously time them TO the frame OF THE beat is just BLAH!!! :x

BUT... With Motivation to finish and the hope that what I finish is worth seeing by more than just myself is enough for me to forge on.

One of the reasons I haven't edited was loss in this myth known as motivation. Perhaps there will come a time when I'll LIKE editing? [then again, I LOVE finishing the damn timeline like 20x more ^_^]

Motivation is the reason I ever finish. Somebody motivate me please? ^_^

The classic line that you hear from actors is "What's my motivation?" After all, both actors and amv creators use their own creative talents to bring the work of others to life while adding their own twists to everything.

That said, a video, or any interpretation of a work should be able to stand on its own merits. If you have to explain why it works or else no one can understand it, then it's really not conveying the themes at all. Personally, I never really saw the point of having dedications either before or after a video. I'm sure that there may be some sentimental reasoning for it, but when seeing such things in a contest, I feel that it cheapens the desired effect. Each individual appreciates such works differently, and often to gain a deeper understanding of a particular work it helps to hear about the viewpoints of others, and the creator is no exception. Many videos can be enjoyed on several different levels, and sometimes it requires a bit of explaination to jump-start people's thinking to get them to appreciate it on all levels.

Fucking hell, I seem to agree with Bogosort. It's the end of the world.

As for my own reactions as a viewer, I actually try to avoid AMVs with personal dedications. To me, it feels like rifling through someone else's mail, or going through their personal mementos, or eavesdropping on a *cough* extremely personal phone conversation. Yeah, yeah, they put it out to the public to begin with. But I still feel weird and tresspass-ey. Personal quirk. I'd never release a video to which I had THAT much of a personal connection (indirect or symbolic, yeah, but "squee hearts n flowers this is for my wonderfullest angel of a girl/boyfriend" ... um, no).

Abstractly speaking, I am interested in the process of editing, and I do like to hear about the concoction of a vid if there's a story behind it. ("So one day I got whacked in the head by a falling girder, and this idea came to me in a flash of light...") But that's a separate kind of entertainment/interest, entirely apart from the enjoyment of an AMV. Like reading liner notes. You can listen to a CD perfectly well without ever looking at the liner notes, and I bet most people do.

So, well. That's my 2c.

Oh, whoops, that's what happens when I stop joking around on a forum and actually put some thought into a post. I promise it won't happen again. =P
