the negative aspects of the evangelion phenomena

Post by bum » Wed Mar 31, 2004 5:33 am

i started watching serial experiment lain two days ago (for the third time, but its bein a while) lain came out on dvd the same time that evangelion did. though it didnt last anywhere near as long on the shelf. gasaraki, which was released at around the same time, was prety damn good (or soo ive heard, well im buying the bos set on the weekend). evangelion, took the world by storm, while gasaraki and lain, both equaly kick ass (and confusing, as far as lain is concerned) we're left to bite the dust. so from what i see, while evangelion took the wopld by storm (and changed peoples lives, evangelion changed me ALOT ) i think that people loved it too much, and ignored alot of other great anime. if you havent seen lain, then go find a copy now, thier is not a wierder, more confusing, graphicaly amazing (from an artistic point of view), abstract (well, alot of the scene's are very different from anything) or well, theirs just nothing like it, its an absolutely amazing anime. sadly, like gasaraki and other greate anime (such as nadesico, which isnt my type but its prety good) lain was missed by alot of people, who we're too caught up with evangelion. basicaly, it sux

You must be jocking, your comment is really out there right with Molder and “Truth is out there”. I got all 3 series and evangelion is the best by far.
Evangelion is a good anima and it’s not bad to be in it’s shadow.
But maybe N million people are wrong and you are right when you say that evangelion is overrated.

Who's obsessed with Eva? I'm not obsessed with eva

I think liking it doesn't warrant obsession. I've seen Lain, and I dare say I almost liked it more than Eva. I keep watching a ton of other good shows, and...

Yea... what is your point? :?

It sounds kinda like my brother who claims that whoever sees Eva has to have their life changed or something. I say - watch it, eat some chips, then watch it some more, then go watch something else. Or something :|

Evangelion is alright it was my favourite anime for quite a while, but I have a soft spot for comedy that Eva just doesn't have :¬ \
I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

I thought Bum was talking about how NGE's release overshadowed Lain's because they came out at around the same time, not about being obsessed with NGE... :?

:?:

Well, I haven't missed out on Lain, anyways.

Besides, it came out same time as Escaflowne, too, but it didn't seem to overshadow that show too much...

you must've been looking at only one or too media/opinion source, 'cause lain was pretty big by itself, if not in the amv community than in its own circles, and for eva, vice versa.

i wasn't paying much attention to anime at all, so both of them didn't seem particularly important when they came out. :?

Certianly Evangelion took center stage but those who where already in the anime community didn't miss the others. However, people who are into anime now because of Evangelion missed it, and probably a lot more while continuing to rant and rave about Evangelion.

But as far as I am concerned, Gasaraki is an awesome show... you just haev to be patient for the first 8 eps while they talk and gets things started. (this may be tough for some).

Lain, I never missed that. No one should have. It was so in it's own genre at the time.

meh, my 2 cents...

In my humble opinion, this is an idiotic suggetion. I only say this because I always think it is idiotic to blame good things for being good. There are other amazing series, but since Evangelion is by far one of America's most favored series, it gets reccomended more and seen by more people. As superb & essential as Lain is, a higher amount of the general masses would probably love Evangelion then would love Lain. It isn't like watching Evangelion makes people not watch other things, unless for some reason they die right after they watch Evangelion. Once they've seen Evangelion they can go watch other amazing series. You can't love something too much. People will watch what they want to. It isn't like it matters *when* someone buys something. It's not like a good series has to be bought right when it's released or else it has been disgraced, or that series released at the same time as Evangelion weren't bought. So what's the grievence here? Plenty of anime fans who saw Evangelion as one of their first series still see other series and things that where released at the same time as Evangelion.

im not directly blaming evangelion, its moer that im blaming the whole phenomena that followed behind it. and lets face it, if you asked someone "what was your first anime" or "what got you into anime" chances are that they will say evangelion, considering the evergrowing rate of dvd's being released due to an evergrowing number of anime fans, this is definetly a very good thing. its just that it overshadow's alot of other anime erleased at the time, i mean, when i first got evangelion it was because i had seen it on tv and loved the series. i didnt even know it was anime back then. when buying eva, i didnt know what an amv or an anime convention was. and i only bought lain (for $140  ) after reading some rave (yet brief) reviews in a pc mag. thier we're probaly alot of greate anime released back then, and nge would have overshadow's alot of them for theys new anime fans.
