So, I've been out of the AMV scene for some time due to software troubles, but a recent upgrade let me edit again, yesterday morning I had a good idea for a video, and so I sat down and started editing and in just one day I had the thing about 80% complete. It'll have to wait a few more days because I have school stuff that will keep me off the computer for a while, but even if it takes me another week to finish up, it'll still be by far my fastest-edited video. Normally I figure I can do about one per four-month school term.

Part of the reason it's gone so fast is that it's a Read Or Die OAV girl-girl romance video. It didn't occur to me until I had the idea for this video, but that show actually seems to contain a lot of lesbian subtext already. There's not much stretching needed to make it fit my video. Entire sections of the video practically edit themselves - I just yoink ten seconds or more of the original footage, make a few cuts to match it to the beat, and the result works.

If this thread is going to be about ROD and whether I do or don't have a dirty mind, then maybe I should have put it in the "general anime" section; I'm putting it here instead because the points I'm really more interested in discussing are AMV points:

I used to love Saikano. Then I did an amv to it using In The End. Now I hate Saikano

I'm not sure what you're really asking, but I'm guessing you mean, "Is it ok to 'reinterpret' a song to mean something different than what the artist that wrote it meant?" I would say sure. Keeps things interesting.

Yeah -- I come to hate the anime I used shortly after completion of a video.
The grudge goes away in a year or so, though. Similar things happen with music. I'm not sure why.

Yes, my Xmas video. Not my favorite video but I did the entire thing in one day. Meh, I enjoy it.

I usually do not want to listen to a song right after I make a video to it. After awhile I can listen to it again gladly though. And about it not being what the artist interpreted or whatever. I received an email about 3 years back about my Bebop video to Dust in the Wind by Kansas. The ca't remember the email too well but I remember the person saying that the song was supposed to be about Christian stuff (sorry can't remember the wording) and he said the video was stupid because I didn't follow the artist's vision or whatever. I basically said who cares really. It's just an AMV. Get a grip. That guy never emailed back. Must've offended him, he seemed the type to be offended easily.

Actually, I had in mind the same question I asked about video: has your use of a given piece of music in an AMV, changed the way you feel about that piece of music? The answer fo me is almost always "yes" - taking the song apart beat-by-beat and matching it to video makes me think about its content in a different way from just what I get listening to the song. Usually I like the music and anime better after using it for AMV purposes... I don't hate my recent videos, it's my old videos that I hate. But YMMV, obviously.

On "re-interpreting" the song or anime to mean something other than what the recording artist/studio intended, I think that's a good thing; I try to do it, and am pleased when I see others doing it.

Ignore the subject im not really trying to be mean. I made a successful video in 4 hours. Also the song i used for it i just heard two hours prior to making the video. Thats true speed. It has a 3.2 star rating as well. Since i am talking about it i should just mention its name. "Akira-Promises".

I made my 3rd video in 7 (because, really, it was a jerk-off; nothing more, nothing less), and for my latest vid, there was a point where I was on a massive roll and placed about half of all the scenes within 3 hours. Of course, then I spent a few times that amount to actually tweak those cuts out

SYLN, which I consider to be my first good video, was edited in a blazingly smooth 13 hours (about two 6.5 hours sessions over two nights). It would have been finished in one night if I wasn't falling asleep during the editing process...

Oh I totally agree that I think about a song differently when I use it for an AMV. Once I hit the point where I know that I wanna make a video to a song, and I start thinking about what I want to do with it... I start liking the song more than I did before, After I finish the video, I don't usually hate the song or anything, it just becomes "my amv song".
I actually began liking In The End when I made my vid to it... but I quickly went back to hating it after I finished :p
