Is the star rating redundant?

Post by Atvaark » Sat Mar 20, 2004 4:54 am

I was just looking at my Edit Videos page and I noticed something interesting. With only one exception, sorting my vids by star rating gives the same sequence as sorting them by number of opinions.

Look by yourself (list sorted by star rating):

Code: Select all

# ops star avg.
2 2,98
2 3,14
6 3,15
6 3,33
6 3,48
5 3,53
7 3,6
8 3,61
18 3,68
I was wondering whether the correlation is just a coincidence or if it's the same for other people.

(I tried to establish other correlations with overall score and "top 10 score", but as we all already know, there's no obvious relationship, except between overall and "top 10", but that's not a surprise.)

That's with the 'list by ops' using only vids with 10 or more reviews (more than enough to show any pattern there might be).

From that..I'd say no. Not much correlation between number of reviews and star ratings. In fact, it's been my experience that the more reviews you get, the more average downloads you get, and hence the lower the star ratings. That's the only pattern I've seen in my vids. :?

Well, it's subject to change. My newer vids haven't dropped yet on the stars (they haven't been downloaded enough yet) so they shouldn't really be counted. The ones that stand out most in my mind are the vids I used on the op exchange a few months back (the first 8 listed in the '# of ops' I gave). Those have about the same average star rating. Comparing them to videos I never forced anyone to watch/download/review isn't really fair. They're two different matters altogether (those downloading vids they want to watch are more likely to score high than the ones forced to watch, while at the same time the ones forced to review are more likely to review than the ones just getting vids they think they might be interested in).

You'd need to cut down on which vids to compare for this sort of thing. I have a lot of vids, so just taking them all as being in the same 'category' for this sort of comparison won't work. I'd need some sort of qualification details to know which vids to look for connections between ops and stars. :?

In fact, almost all of the opinions I received were obtained without my intervention. So I think you should only retain videos for which people spontaneously gave an opinion.

I find it odd that, among my videos, there's an inverse correlation between # of ops and average star rating... however, I've come to pretty much ignore the star system, especially as the spread between my top and bottom videos is less than 0.1.

How many anti-Star threads do we need anyways?

I don't know, let's see if I can figure that out by looking at my star rating stats. :?

Well, I have a 1.32 difference between my highest and lowest ranking vids on the star scale. And it's an accurate reflection of how much better the 'high' vid is compared to that mistake vid.

Maybe those people who are only getting a .1 difference just haven't made any really bad vids. Why complain about the fact that you haven't done anything horrid enough to make your good vids seem especially good? If all your stars are in the same range, then either they're all similar, or you have the same people downloading all your vids and giving them the same score (yes, this happens when people get steady viewers).

That's pretty natural since most people know better than to upload crappy vids that will get a 2 average next to their good 3.5+ average videos. ^_^;

I didn't intend to start an anti-star thread. I was just wondering about the correlation between the number of opinions a vid receives and its star rating.
