nonsense

I personally think it is possible to have a video that has no story, is totally chaotic with little direction, and still be kick A$$. From an artist standpoint this is abstract video editing. Does anyone like artistic vids? :?:

Even if you're being "abstract," there's still gotta be some kind of theme or purpose to what you're doing; otherwise, it's... yeah... just random clips with no artistic backing, no matter how much you claim it to be "artistic" or "abstract."

Theme can be just as important as story. You don't necessarily have to tell a story in your video (which, as paizuri says, may or may not necessarily be a summary of the footage used.. hopefully isn't..), but you definitely need to have some kind of theme or idea you're trying to get across.

Be that a sense of motion, a sense of flight, mental turmoil... there's still gotta be something there.

I do not agree. I usually like to manipulate the situations in the anime to make a new story (which is not the one of the anime) to fit the lyrics or theme of the song.

Moreover, as outlined by others before, you have to get a point across your video otherwise it's just a bunch of random clips sticking together.

Synchronizing clips and putting 2.654.123.953 effects on them just to be "on the beat" does not make a video: if effects have to be used, they need to be used to support the story / concept, otherwise they make no sense.

Hmm... maybe it was a little too harsh, but I just felt I had to toss my 2 pennies in... :P
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Agreed. I think that's part of what can really separate a video from the masses. You don't even necessarily have to create your own, totally new story (which is entirely possible, but extremely difficult).

If you want to focus on a certain aspect of the show that's not already the main focus of the show (usually done in some character profile videos), you're definitely going in the right direction. That's what really makes an AMV distinct from just watching the show; you're doing something new with the footage.

Hah, look at me, acting like I know what I'm talking about... :P

I'm don't think that "abstract" implies "chaotic", except maybe for people who think that splashing paint on a wall constitutes "Art". But "abstract" doesn't necessarily require a theme, either.

Suppose I took, say, ten still frames from any anime, then played them back through some complex kaleidoscopic mirror filters, timing it all to change and flow with some high energy dance music.

The result could be entertaining if done right, but still lack any kind of theme or goal other than saying, "This looks cool" - which could be said about any AMV with story or not. Of course, whether this particular concept is really an AMV is another topic.

I've seen interesting live-action abstract music videos. I don't see why it couldn't be done with anime footage, as well.

Allow me to quote Matt Murray: "These days anybody can edit [on the beat/use effects on the beat/use seamless effects/blah/blah/whatever], in order for a video to be good it has to have something more."

i like vids that have good effects, but that are story driven, if they have a crappy story line and mindnumbing effects i dont like em.. if they are all story and just cuts i like em.. but not that much... if they have fades and a story i lub em.. and if their good effects with a good story.. then im ALL OVER that vid... here are some examples of vids i like...

Time *little effects, decent story line.. but its FF8 so there isnt too much to work with*
My December *there isnt too much of a storyline, just a romance vid.. not overdone with effects.. *
Crying Angel *nice mix of effects and a good story line, a bit less effects would have been good, but it didnt kill the vid*
Sonics Run *decent story line, a bit overuse of effects.. not a terrible vid*
Atencion! *No story, Overused Effects.. shamelessness=greatness??*
Tainted Donuts *Great story line, Great use of effects.. overall a great vid!*
Dickass *The title says nothing about this vid, its good use of cuts and and flashyness, and its a FLCL vid that didnt make me laugh*
Why *A good story, nice romantic vid.. not overdone with effects.. but a great vid!*
Fire *overused effects, no story, makes my eyes bleed, not a terrible vid.. but i didnt like it that much*
Excel Pop-up video *Great use of effects, great story line.. very good vid!*
Damaged *not too overused effects, nice story line.. pretty good vid*
Uber Depressing Video *a very sad music vid, it has a pretty good story.. even though i havent seen the anime.. i still liked this vid*
Idol-ology *Nice effects, pretty good story line.. under the circumstances...*
Tribute to Andy Kauffman *no point, no effects.. but it deserves a mention*
Nabeshins No Escape *Story driven vid.. dont recall if there were effects... but it deserved a mention!*
Why Did The Raptor Cross The Road? *Good vid.. needed to be done... decent effects.. not much of a story...*
Stop the rock *A LOT of people i have talked to say "crappy effects just thrown together" but i like this vid.. sure there is no story line, but there is accual editing.. not just the effects, but the little anime chars dancing.. not a bad vid IMO*
Chibi Things That Kill *Good use of effects/editing, really good storyline, i liked this vid!*
Project Go! *No storyline.. Nice lyric Sync, good editing, and well.. bravo..*
Without GTO *Really good editng.. the only thing that makes this vid bad would have to be the audio left in.. other then that, good story/lyric sync/effects!*
All You Need To Win An AMV Contest *no story, terrible effects... but not the worst vid i've ever seen.. bravo!*
Jinnai and the Bugrom LIVE! *Great use of clips, no effects.. but a Great vid..*
WE WANT YOU! *Great Effects, Great Editing, GREAT Storyline! One of the best vids i have seen!*
Saints Go Marching In *Great editing, tells the story of Steel Angel Kurumi 2 very well, good use of effects.. bravo!*
The Starman * Effects are used VERY nicely.. the timing is pretty good, the editing is good, and it even tells a little story.. bravo!*
Smooth Criminal *Wow.. Just WOW.... the vid is great.. Effects are very nice, the editing was brilliant.. the story was there and used very nicely... VERY good job!*

thats it for my list of vids that i think kick ass.. i know i left a few out, but this was for Effects and Story vids.. hope you enjoy em..
