I've used a few LP songs, and I have no guilt over it.
I used 'From the Inside' for a Saiyuki video - but when I did it, there were only 9 vids for that song, and very few vids for the anime.
I used 'Hit the Floor' for a Yami no Matsuei video - and there were 12 vids for that song at the time, but there were *no* action vids for YnM, and no LP vids for it either.
I used 'Don't Stay' for a Night Walker video - there were about 24 vids at the time, but very few for the anime, so no guilt on my part.
I used 'Runaway' for a YYH vid - no need to count those since it's a very overused LP song - but there were 2 action vids for Hiei at the time (amazing now that I think about it), so I felt no guilt.
I used 'Crawling' for a YYH vid - again, one of the *most* used LP songs - but it was the first profile vid for Kurama on this site, and a unique twist on how to interpret the lyrics, so I felt no guilt.
I don't think it's the song so much as what you do with it. So far, I like my LP vids, and overused song or not - I consider them original in their own right, and not to be dismissed just because other people liked the songs as well.
As for songs that would fit any anime - that's hard for me to say. I can listen to almost any song and think of ways in which it would fit my favorite anime - because the ways you can interpret music are unlimited. I wouldn't lie if I said I can listen to almost any song and think of a YYH vid to make with it. It's just a matter of interpretation.
