First, this should have gone in 'software' - not hardware. Think of hardware as parts of your computer you can touch. You can't touch windows movie maker so it's software - a program. ^.~
Second, what was the video you tried to produce? What format option did you choose in wmm when you went to save the video? What format were your source clips in (huffyuv, wmv, mpg, xvid, divx, etc) - and did you do anything to them before you added them to your timeline (cropping in Vdub, editing with an avisynth script)?
I've never had a problem with wmm 1.0 in producing to any of the given formats (in version 2.0 it's different, but 1.0 didn't have the bugs that the new version does). So I'd need to know what format you tried to save the video to, and the format your clips were in.
Also, you didn't try to save the movie over another file, did you? Always make sure it's a new file name and that you have enough space to save the video in that directory (if you're saving to the AVI format in 1.0 then you'll need at least a gig of harddrive space free).

Okay, so it's a video of still frames - still pictures rather than animated scenes (meaning the 'clips' are actually jpg file rather than avi or mpg). Is that right?
If you're using pictures, can you see those in the preview box when you highlight them (after they're added to your timeline, click the clip and see if it shows on the 'preview' window). If not, it could be the format of the pics you're using. Are they all jpg, or did you include gif and bmp formats as well?
Do you have music added to this, and if so, does the footage go past the end of the audio track? It shouldn't matter what format your audio is in, if you did add audio - I just want to know how long the video is on your timeline.
How long is this still-pic video? If you don't shorten the pictures so they only last a few seconds, you could have a video that's just way too long to be produced. When you look at the video, do you look at it as a 'thumbnail' video or timeline? Meaning - does it show the audio, or just little boxes showing the different pics in the order you placed them?
The reason I ask is because if you're using still pictures wmm will automatically make them close to 2 seconds each or longer. And unless you use the 'timeline' option to view the clips and then maximize it (the little '+' sign on the left of your timeline) then you could have a video that lasts for hours when you only meant it to be a few minutes long. Check the last clip and see how long the video is.
And when you said you 'tried wmv' which one did you pick? There are something like 15 wmv options in wmm 1.0. When you hit 'save movie' and then it tells you the format - what does it say there? (write down the option - or click the button and look through the other options till you find one you want - and write down the bitrate it gives so I can tell what wmv format you're using).
Also - are you using Windows XP? If you have that versoin of windows, you shouldn't be using windows movie maker 1.0 - you should get the free upgrade to 2.0 from the mircorsoft webpage.

I use XP, but I happen to have a copy of the ME version of wmm as well. And I'll ask again - what format are you trying ot produce the video to?silver_moon_wolf wrote:<li> all it says for a formay is .WMV so thats the one i keep trying

It does not just say wmv.
When you produce the video you click 'File' then you click 'save movie' and then you see the word 'setting' - and it gives you the option. No where on that page (if you use the default setting) does it say wmv. If you're using a strange version of wmm, let me know - because it sounds like you just aren't saving the video if you're not getting to the 'save movie' page.
Once you click 'files' and 'save movie' you pick the format you want to save the video to. The default will say 'Medium Quality (recommended)' - beneath that, it gives the bitrate 'Video for email and dual-channel ISDN (128Kbps)' - it doesn't say wmv anywhere yet.
But you wouldn't choose that option so it's not important. On the drop-down menu where it reads 'medium quality (recommended)' - click the little arrow pointing downward so the menu drops and you can see the other formats you can choose from. Click 'Other'. You'll be given 9 format options for the ME version of wmm - none of which are avi (my mistake there). You said you tried them all. Did you?
When you click on each, do you get that exact same error? Just that it can't produce the video? If so, do you still have all your source clips in the exact folder where you started out with them at? If you've moved or deleted or changed the name for even one clip (or the audio) then you can't produce the movie - because it won't be able to find the source. Check them - make sure it's all still there. Choose the highest setting you can - the 'Video for broadband NTSC (768 Kbps)' - it shouldn't be more than 30mbs total for the wmv file.
If it gives you the exact same error, then try reinstalling your wmm program - check the microsoft webpage if the player came already set on your computer.
One note - I don't edit with my ME version of wmm, but I did just produce a video made in the XP version of wmm (the project files work in either) and it went through fine. When do you get this error? Does it actually save the file, or does the error pop up right after you choose the folder to save the video in? Does the 'saving movie' box pop up at all, or just an error message?
