Getting started on a new project...

Post by Kaji01 » Sat Feb 14, 2004 3:30 pm

All right, after a couple months of editor's block, I've finally come up with an idea I really want to work with...and I don't know where to begin. On the one hand I really want to get started with the project, but on the other hand I'm busy with backlogged papers for school and dealing with a bit of depression of late that's holding me back from getting started on it, in spite of how much I want to do so.

Anyone else been in a similar situation before and have ideas on how to overcome it?

Sometimes, it's best to wait.

I came up with two 'ultimate videos' that I want to make pretty well before I ever touched Premiere; but these still haven't been made. And I know they're not getting made this year, nor probably the next.

If you got a project and you don't feel ready, wait. But don't waste the time that you wait; use it to make other videos which you feel you can handle in the meantime.

That's just it though, it's not so much that I'm not sure how to handle the video project so much as it is channeling the motivation and desire I have to work on it into action, in spite of the other things in my life that are draining on it. I guess probably the best way to phrase it is I'm trying to figure out how to focus on a project, really.

Well, that's a bit tougher; I can't say I've had that sort of problem. I edit when I feel the need to, and don't the rest of the time.

I think the best way to do anything is just start; generally, this works more than well for me. Stopping usually proves more difficult.

As unhealthy as it might sound, what I do when I'm editing, is take energy and time that would otherwise go to other things (like homework, reading, video games, etc.) and direct it all towards the project; with my last video, since I saw it was turning out to be what I hoped it would be, I pretty much made it my #1 top priority for the week.

Still, more than anything, this depends on the person. It depends on how good you are at planning your time (which I suck at), how good of an attention span and perseverance you got (where I border on the obsessive), and how well you deal with discouragement/depression/artistic frustration (the first I tough out, the second I ignore, the third often does get me). I suggest assessing these factors for yourself and seeing how you can use areas where you're stronger to compensate for whatever weaknesses you got.

If that makes any sense
