practice amv's ?
i just had this idea today as i was thinking up some wierd eva amv idea im planing on starting as soon as i stop geting more fucking assigments. anyway, the idea is a bit above my level of "amv expertice" . so i thought that it would be good if i mucked around with it, created a few amv's, ones that no-one but me would probaly ever see, just to improve my skills so i can tackle some idea's ive bien thinking of, but are probaly too hard for my level (im over ambitios alot, seriosly, alot). so, anyone think this is a good idea ? anyone els actualy do this ?

I've sorta done this at times, but I tend to use "real" videos as practice usually. Another good idea would be to just try doing whatever you wanna do anyways, and if it doesn't come out how you like it, then just don't release it. Then, a couple months down the road, come back, and REMAKE the video, and it ought to turn out great this time.

Have you been spying on my mind or something?
As far as I'm concerned, at best, I've only made one actual AMV and two practice ones, at worst, no actual AMV's and 3 practice ones.
The latest one is exactly what you said; I took Eva, took a stupid song I like that has nothing to do with it, and messed around for 3 days.
Now, why did I release it? 3 people laughed. Same happened with my last vid. If more than 2 people I know respond positively and tell me I should post it, I dew it.

I strongly suggest everyone who makes practice vids release them. 1) Sharing is good 2) It allows people to laugh not just with you, but at you; while you don't lose your face because you admit up front that it's just a practice AMV and you obviously never intended it to be anything great.
Dew them. They're fun.
I'm hoping I'm through my messing-around practice stage and on to actual vids now though.

Excerpt from my site
From: http://www.ecks-s.net/videos_hero_of_lodoss.php
Funny part about it was.. that I have discussed this with a few people, and they thought some of the video errors were cool. It was made with an older computer and crappy capture equipment, so at times during capturing the video would skip (HD loading).... but most of the points that skip in the actual video skip to beats of the song. They thought it was kinda cool though it was completely unintentional.Hero of Lodoss:
Warning! This was my first video ever. It still has a few minor errors in it that I'll never fix. This was my "learner's vid" basically just experimenting to learn how to make these things.
Why is it here? To remind myself, fans, and those struggling to learn how to make these things just as I once was, that nobody starts at the top. So when I'm famous in the AMV world (yah, right) everyone can look back and say, "I remember when he made that crappy Lodoss War video!"

I'm on two minds when it comes to this.
First, it's made me cynical about people's actual experience. If somebody says that this is their first vid, IMO they damn well better mean "The first time I ever opened [editing program of choice], this is what came out, just like this." Call me cynical, but I don't think people are 100% honest about that sometimes.
On the other hand, there's that "All my videos are entered into the org" checkbox. So in order to be considered a "real" AMV creator, you have to put in everything, even if it's just a random song you wanted to mess around with for fun.
I'm not sure what to think, really. I guess you have to either create absolute greatness all the time, or never finish anything and thus get out of having to enter it onto the DB.

I started out with low quality footage...then began to improve with a few vids at a time
Sadly, there all DBZ and I'm scared as hell to upload 'em...

American and Anime shows can be amazing...and they can suck in equal measure, neither is superior to the other.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE PERFECT CARTOON, OR THE PERFECT ANIME, BOTH HAVE POSITVES AND NEGATIVES.

If you think they're good, go for it - if you don't, then why share to begin with? Just don't let the anime/song stop you.Dr. Zar wrote:I started out with low quality footage...then began to improve with a few vids at a time

As for 'practice vids' -
I'm not really sure. I usually try something new with each vid, or try to reinforce some aspect of editing that I picked up in a previous vid. I have one or two that were just because I wanted to edit something a certain way, so I suppose those would count as 'practice' - but I did it because it was fun and I wanted to edit and then watch them, not just to 'improve' or some other type motivation. If I want to 'practice' a certain aspect of editng, I'm going to do it in a vid that I'd enjoy watching - otherwise the editing would be 'blegh' and I'd get no fun out of it during the making *or* after the production.

Practice vids
Oh yes, practice vids are a must for me. Actually the video that I am working on now was just going to be for practice on working with image mattes. However the effects came out so well, I thought why not just make the thing. I made over half a dozen simple vids before I felt comfortable in Premiere. I'm sure it will take more than that before I am comfortable in After Effects.
