Cropping is also the tool of anyone who uses footage with black bars anywhere on the screen. I do it all the time.
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.

And those with song lyrics on the english version - never forget the song lyrics. There is a legitimate reason to learn subtitle removal - for subtitles on officially released anime dvds. Song lyrics. ^_^

It'd have to be a pretty crappy DVD to have hardcoded music subtitles.

You should see the You're Under Arrest OVA/TV DVD's from AnimEigo EVERYTHING is softsubbed, even the credits during the OP and ED.

It's shocking.

Actually, I was under the impression that hardsubbed lyrics were the norm... Trigun, NGE, FY all had them.

I just wish some discs were better about hardsubbing signs and other on-screen text, because I occasionally want to watch some things dubbed and still know what those signs are saying. FLCL vol. 1-2 come to mind.

i dont know if this helps much, but i have cut out many subs in my vids using vdub. i suggest cropping subs at the top and bottom of the screen, and blur out subs in the middle like credits, etc (but the blur usually comes out looking crappy if you dont do it just right, thats why you should crop all you can). also, read the subtitle removal guide^^
