I just got the fuck back from Okinawa and no one hated it when I tried to speak japanese. Everyone out there thought it was kinda cool. MCCS (Marine Corps Community Services) even had a Okinawan native come out and teach us a few words and give us a heads up on customs and curticies. Did you know that is Disrespectful to stick ur chop sticks pointing up in your food, like u would with a fork and a steak. I didnt read all of that stupid essay, it pissed me off too much so i stopped and decided to flame it here. 8) Anyway. You may find a few ppl that dislike you using their language, but thats just the type of ppl that are out there.

No, the English language is not the hardest language to learn. It's just limited. Many european languages are similar to each other in structure and method, so a German can find more ease learning French or Spanish then he would English.
English is sort of ugly little language that borrows a lot of funny words from other languages. This has resulted in problems learning it from other languages and vice versa. Finish is a very simple language because it's completly propritary, the Fins pretty much developd their own language with inspirations from no others, as a result their children can learn their language and more complex idea's sooner in life because the words themselves are easier to learn. Their word for 'Independance' is only one cylible, most 2nd graders fully understand the words meaning.
Japanese, it's sentance structure greatly reminds me of 10 years of french class. (Here in Canada a took French classes from first grade up untill 10th when it wasn't required any more). A lot of things are reversed word wise. Unlike Japanese, French is very much based on the feminin and the masculine with no word for 'It' even, so it's not wholefully comparable.
Kanji on the other hand, is EVIL. As Nao, the Japanese Exchange student I loosely knew (Who had a boy ask her to sign his card captor sakura manga just because she was Japanese.) told me in no uncertian terms, 'Kanji is almost to hard to learn as a first language.' I mean jesus, 8000+ characters, and they have a secondary 46 character alphabet as well, that can spell ALL the words from the Kanji. @.@ Talk about redundancy.
The part of the 'Anime Freak' with the Evangelion T-shirt made me laugh though... Hu hu hu. ^^

hmm, not only is this too general (it depends on the person) but English and German are sister languages, so really it might be easier. I have yet to meet a german who couldn't speak English fluently, hell one of my friends is German and you wouldn't even know by the way he talks (side for the accent : P). German is my second language so i guess it might even work the other way around...DJ_Izumi wrote:No, the English language is not the hardest language to learn. It's just limited. 1. English is definately one of the hardest, I've read that somewhere, can't remember where but meh. It's due to all of the exceptions.
2. The word 'it' in French is just meshed into 'il' the masculine form. As Izumi said, French is rather dependent on genders. Though many things in French *structure wise* are reversed. That's why it's easy to spot all you people who go to translators :p

Spanish is the same way, I don't like having to remember different forms of words just because OBJECTS have supposed genders. Same with the sentence structure, I often find myself writing things in English style structure, which is really backwards for them.Moonlight Soldier wrote: 2. fair enough, you have your reasons for your beleifs and I have mine.DJ_Izumi wrote:Most of my extended family speaks Dutch as a first language (Immigrated to Canada in 47 after the war) and I've had extensive (unenjoyable) imprisonment in french classes, and everyone said the same thing. French Teacher: There is no word 'It' in french.
Izumi: Why don't the french make an 'It' word?
French Teacher: You can't just make new words when you need them.
Izumi: Then why is the french word for 'Stupid' just 'Stupide'? :/
My 10th Grade French class was the best, the teacher really just spent the whole time talking about the one year he spent in Mexico living out of a Volkswagon Van... entirely in english. o_O
