Why do you watch anime or read manga? I went to the bookstore and my mom let me buy some stuff and when she saw me looking for a graphic novel shes like "Isn't this what you put on you Christmas List?" I said yes, and she decided to get it for me today

, but when she flipped through it she asked me why the hell do you want this?! So now I'm asking you people out there, why the hell do you like anime/manga?

I'm not aiming for this to be a superficial topic and getting posts like the girls and/or guys are hot, but that is acceptable. If you want to answer like that go ahead, but profound is always a plus, and you dont necessarily have to have a point behind your answer, but its preferrred.

Because you can do things in anime that you just can't do in live-action movies. It's complete fantasy (in some anime, at least) and unlike most American 'cartoons' it has a plot that is deep enough to attract mature viewers. It's like watching a great fantasy book brought to life - the same reason kids prefer the cartoon version of 'Beauty and the Beast' to the live action versions, or even the books (though 'Beauty' is a much better version than the Disney spiel).

Manga is graphic novels, it's an illustrated story, just a step down from animated stories. As someone who was a reader first, I like anime because it brings the story to life. It has the fantasy elements (in the anime I prefer) without the 'blagh' effects and problems that come with US fantasy movies. It's animated, so they can do literally anything, make the characters do whatever they want to show them doing - the only limit is how well they can draw the scenes. Give me a live-action movie or series that has the elements in it that YYH has - the character designs are not meant for live-action, and the fantasy elements don't lend themself to that sort of thing. And as much as I like what parts of the manga I've seen, even those bits of illustration aren't the same as seeing it animated. So a simple fantasy story retelling the 'anime' plot won't be as good as the anime itself. It *is* a genre all by itself, and I like it for being something that I - as a fantasy reader and science fictioni movie fan - can't find anywhere else.

I was drawn to it, because anime's animation style was far more life-like and serious than Looney Tunes or Disney cartoons. It was something unique to see.

So why do I still watch the stuff? Probably because most of the anime I watch is sci-fi/fantasy, and most of it (Eva, Cowboy Bebop, InuYasha, etc) comes off with a better plot and styling than most of the "B" movie crap the Sci-Fi Channel is playing now. Basically, it's another option to go for sci-fi/fantasy and comedy, when most of today's American programs are so politically-correct, filled with sexual inuendo, and just so dumbed down, they're not worth watching.

I slowly got into anime and manga in high school after having seen a few shows available at the Blockbuster. There was a movie called Akira, and one called Ninja Scroll, and a series called Record of Lodoss War. Having always been an animation fan, this Japanese animation really interested me. When I got to college, I found a group of like-minded individuals had already set up a club, the UT Anime Club. I fell in hardcore after that...

Why do I like anime and manga? Well, I don't know. I always liked American animation (still do...I know that's not an opinion shared by many). Shows like Tom and Jerry still entertain me greatly. But one show I particularly liked was Gargoyles. It's a great show. What I like about anime is that there are many series with rich characters and plots, rather than an exception as in American animation.

I got into Anime in High School too. I asked a friend that sat next to me in Govt/Econ if he had any movies about dragons and he gave me a burned copy of Escaflowne the TV series. After Watching it i was stunned at what Animation could be. Than alittle later I noticed Pokemon, started watching it .. then it happned .. my first Anime crush ^_^'. After That i was totally hooked on it. I would have to say that i Watch anime and Read Manga because i kinda live in a fantasy world in my mind. Always dreaming up magic powers, stuff like that. Always dreaming.

Anime is like the perfect mix between a book and a movie--complex plot, good character development, and in a visual medium. The visual aspect captures things that books can't, and since all but OAVs are longer and more developed than movies, characters also have time to develop into "real" people. There are still some really stupid anime (how do you pluralize anime, btw?) and some really excellent, well developed movies, and I've always loved reading in general--but yeah--anime is generally a really good blend. *shrug* I just like good stories, I guess...

on 12/24/2003 the Cell Games are finally gonna be out on DVD! I checked it out on barnesandnoble.com, but it is a little too late for the holidays =\ The whole cell games box set is supposed to be out on 1/27/2004, so i will most likely wait for that. Good luck buying!
