What style of animation do you preffer?

Early computer aided animes repulsed me; they had almost no shading and little detail. The exception to these early computer aided animes was Bebop, which still looks as good as any anime today (5 years later). However, the potential of computer anime is starting to really come out, like in animes such as Full Metal Panic, Noir, and Last Exile.
I like old school hand drawn anime more, because it tends to have more detail and fluidity (Escaflowne, Neon Genesis Evangelion). However, hand drawn anime has kind of a "dirty" look to it, or at least compared to computer aided animation, which is very sharp, clean, and precise.
I would probably like computer anime more if not for some really cheesy looking computer animes, such as Big O (looks american to me) and Ninja scroll TV (looks like "undergrads" in places).

I probably haven't seen enough animé (new OR old) to really know what kind of problem you're talking about.CaTaClYsM wrote:Lets not be to forgiving on the new stuff. It still looks like a paint shop pro flood fill was used for the coloring, and I've noticed the same repeated and reused frames.
All I know is that I loved the GAiNAX/Production I.G visuals of FLCL, and I also think Onegai Teacher and O. Twins are really well animated, especially all those background/landscape shots. A real visual treat (no, I'm not talking about the fanservice).
FY: Eikou Den didn't impress me as much, but maybe that's because of the problems with the story (they took the manga and compressed it to fit 4 OAV episodes, thereby losing quite a bit in the process, from what I've read of the translated manga summaries online)... or perhaps it's the attempt at integrating obvious CG with more conventional animation (Suzaku, Seiryuu, and Byakko come to mind).

Yes, but FLCL and Onegai Techer are the exception, not the rule. Animation wise Angel Sanctuary is a good example of what I don't like, same for Angelic Layer and I really don't want to go down the list any further than that.Scintilla wrote:I probably haven't seen enough animé (new OR old) to really know what kind of problem you're talking about.CaTaClYsM wrote:Lets not be to forgiving on the new stuff. Utena has the most beautiful animation I can think of offhand. And I also like CLAMP. Ranma 1/2 doesn't have such pretty character designs, but it's SDs are extremely expressive, I think that's a virtue of animation. I absolutely hated the animation style of Kare Kano.
Here's something I wonder - why are anime horses always so ugly? They're ugly in Fushigi Yuugi, in Berserk, in everything I can think of that has horses. Maybe I've discovered the one area in which the western art style is superior to the Japanese one. ^_~
