How much of a fan are you?

Post by bazanime » Wed Dec 10, 2003 6:16 pm

Two new topics in one day....wow...i must be mad!!!

Anyways.......

How much of a fan are you???

As much as i love anime/manga and japnese culture, only approximately 15% of my time and 10% of my money is spent on it. I'd like to say my years in anime makes me an expert but sadly, not. One feels like a n00b in forums like this.

So that begs another question...Am I less of a fan if I dont know all those jargon/buzzwords of anime like Shouji, Shonen, Shirow, Shinobi (the last two are just jokes :P)...excetra excetra?
Does one have to be even 2% fluent in japanese?
Can one just fain ingnorance and watch anime for what it is?

Anime/Manga for a long time was an underground thing in the west, only surfacing at time to excite and cause controversy. Now anime has almost proliferated the entire western hemisphere, the medium has gained many fresh new fans. They would undoubtabely ask the same n00bified questions......thus risking the flames of fury!!!

Well... I'm a pretty big fan, but I don't know all these Japanese terms that people are hurling about. I still get confused when someone says "oh, it's just a cool shojo series" or the like... even though I've heard the explanations many times... some things stick... some don't.

I guess I really don't care about labels and that's why I don't care about the terms...

Still... I wanted to comment that I was a fan back in the delightful day when you would be in this room watching a film in raw Japanese with a sheet or two of paper telling you roughly what was going on

Even though I don't like DBZ, to see DBZ toys at BURGER KING just blows my mind. I am glad that anime has gone from something a rare few know about to a common thing (even though it invites in a larger percentage of the idiot factor... and you know what I'm talking about)

As much of an anime fan as I am, I think only 20% of my film collection is anime and only 5% of my CD collection is anime music.

I'm sort of rambling here... so I hope that made sense.

Not an incredible lot, but I do give it due respect.

I haven't watched any actual anime in about a month, but I do have a decent collection and probably about 40% of my free spending money (a miserable sum of a very few hundred $ a year) is spent on anime & manga.

Reasons for not being too obsessed? Lack of time, abundance of other interests. I do love it as much as the next guy, although I can't say I'm to any degree obsessed with this.

I've also been learning Japanese for about 3 years now.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

but seriously...sheets of paper??? how does one do that? its hard enough trying to read a long piece of subtitle text on the bottom of the screen when somethings going on at the top. :? .....but i see what you mean.

Just 5 months ago Happy Meals had Hamtaro toys and that anime is not even as hyped as Pokemon or Yughio(misspelt im sure :P ). Another million or so of new fans.

im a big fan of anime but i know almost zero japanese. Only a few choice words.

I guess I'm a big enough fan of anime to cosplay at school which i have many times as character such as Kenshin, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Sano, Spike and most recently Alucard. I did Nicholas for halloween.

I only have a few anime dvd's and 1 box set so not that much anime. I just borrow stuff from friends or buy it off from them.

I don't watch much anime these days. Lots of anime vids, though, and I do collect dvds. ^_^;; I just rarely sit down and rewatch them.

As for Japanese - I use the buzzwords because I like the way the language sounds. I love my anime soundtracks because I like to sing, and I think the language is a lovely change from English (though I also like Spanish). As for shoujo, shonen, etc - it sounds better than saying "I like Card Captor Sakura, it's a nice pretty girly show" - saying it's a 'shoujo anime' gives it some respect. It's the same reason I call Japanese animation 'anime' instead of Japanese cartoons - showing my respect for the genre by using the more 'polite' term.

And then there is the fangirl in me who likes to quote key words and phrases my favorite characters use. Fanfiction just isn't the same without the occassional 'baka' or 'urusai' tossed in. ;p

I would consider myself a good fan of anime .. i mean, i like to watch any anime that my friends would let me borrow and if i like it them i will get it... i also read some mangas like the Love Hina and Ah! my goddess manga just because .. but im not obsessed with anime, i dont have posters or figurines of anime character ... all i do is watch animes and amvs and im happy with that ...

as for the anime theme songs .. i think that they are great and its a good change from the english songs i got ... imma start getting some anime soundtracks when i have the money ... 8)

I guess the reason y i like anime is because i can somewat relate to them ... for example ... love hina ... keitaro ... im a shy guy and i need to build up some nerves to ask a gurl out and all but im getting over that, just like him .. its the same thing with keichi from Ah! my goddess ... ok im talking to much now .. so ill leave it as that.

Well not to mention the insane amount of money I have spent on my collection. I watch at least 3 hours of anime a week. There are always new fansubs coming out and it never gets old. i have been a fan since early or mid 99 before i got into anime my hobby was confederate war between the states reanacting.

Well, i havent really seen that much anime recently, i'm hoping to get more for christmas but I really wouldn't say im in the "otaku" class of anime...umm..liker.

The last anime DVD i bought was End of Evangelion and that was before june and i can't remember the last time I read a manga :( I guess other parts of my life have become more important....

Although I think because of this I put more effort into my AMV making...

Enough to enjoy the genre and have a desire to see/read more OF it.

But not enough to want to learn Japanese and move there.

I like animation (including anime) and 2D art in general. I don't deny that I am also a Disney fan (gotta love the classics). But it's really the animation I'm a fan of and not the the rest of the country. Nothing against Japan of course. My study interests just lie in areas other than Asian culture.
