if you want some money, i can give you some money. i gave some money to a place once, let's say it was pbs.
the thing is, that for years i thought the internet was like a faucet you turned and water came out. i didn't know about the hoover dam, reverse osmosis or ozonation.
so now i am asking you to tell me exactly what hardware you are planning to purchase for the database server and the webfile server and the best price you have a quote for for these items, because i want to know the facts. also there is a remote possiblity that in the course of my wanderings i may chance upon a lower price.
i also want to know how much the cost of data transfer is, so i will know how much my downloads are costing the site. i want to know what your "peak" and "trough" data transfer hours are (eastern standard time), and whether the cost of transfer is less during "trough" hours so i may conduct myself accordingly.

Hey xxxxx,
The web server is currently leased and connected to a 100Mbps line where we peak at 1Mbps somewhere between noon and midnight. Bandwidth charge is based on the amount transferred, but since it is just the web server, we never even get close to our limit of 700G/month.
The hardware has already been purchased for the video storage server. The server is 8 Western Digital 200G drives (WD2000JB) making about 1TB of drive space (two drives are hot-spare drives in case of failure). It is held in a 2U case with two Xeon 2.4G processors and 1G ram. We are connected through a 30Mbps connection which will be increased soon since the line is maxed out periodically between noon and midnight. Bandwidth charge is based on the max speed of the connection and not the amount transfered (which is great since we are on track to transfer 5TB this month).
Total cost for everything so far averages to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000/month. This cost is about to go up since we are going to purchase a web/database server this month and increase our bandwidth usage. The stroage server cost about $3800 when it was purchased earlier this year. The web/database server will probably cost about the same. This server will be 1U, dual Opteron, two stupidly-fast hard drives, and a buttload of RAM (4G or greater). Eventually we would like to get dedicated web and database servers.
So far, donations by members have covered the entire cost. But if donations fall off, the site could be forced to cut costs (bandwidth) or go away entirely. I have faith in the site users that they will be able to sustain this site, but it takes everyone's donation, no matter how small, to make it happen.
I hope this helps. Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^
