'Modern' anime.

Post by DJ_Izumi » Tue Nov 18, 2003 10:59 am

I find my search for interesting anime difficult. Why? Well, I don't much like fantasy, history, or futureistic science fiction.

I don't want 'In 2100, War was beginning...' and I don't want 'A long time ago, in a magical dojo far away...'

I've loved anime set in modern, current times, with serious overtones. Full Metal Panic, Patlabor, Kanon, Perfect Blue, Noir... Things set in the current time, or only just a couple years ahead. (Okay, Patlabor is set in the future year of... 1999 A.D! :O )

Most of the series out there are things like magic, steam punk fantasy, or high end sci-fi... that or they're just Lolicon aimed ecchi series. (*shudder*) Would someone care to point me in the direction of new series to watch then? :P

Why yes, it would be called the General Anime forum.

You know you've been on the Net too long if you know that that's a year too early... :?

You might like Boogiepop Phantom. It's hard to date, but appears to be contemporary; and although it includes a little bit of advanced technology and psychic phenomena, it doesn't stretch plausibility in the way that I think you're objecting to.

Of course, one of the great things about the org is that you can get a sort of sample of a series by watching AMVs from it. I made one myself.

I thaught it was too, but then realized that not only was I spelling 'thought' wrong but that there is a nice General Anime forum up under the 'Anime' subcategory in the Forum Index that (unlike this forum, which by all right sappears to consist mainly of technical babble) contrains endess threads about anime, opinions about anime, and just exactly what anime character everyone wants to hit (take that either way).

Uhh, No, I didn't mean that I thought 'General Video' was where anime posts went, I mean I thought I had clicked 'General Anime' while it seems I clicked 'General Video'. It's not like it's an unreasonable situation, both start with General, and Anime and Video have the same ammount of letters.

Have you considered Initial D yet? No magic, no robots, modern-time period...and from what I've seen, no lolicon

(...hey, I tried...)

Phantom Quest Corp. (a very under rated series)
Perfect Blue
Boogiepop Phantom
Lain
NieA_7
Maison Ikkoku
Orange Road
Street Fighter titles (well, it is!)
I think DNA^2 is
Golden Boy
Gunsmith Cats
Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)

Well... that's off the top of my head.

Sorry... my mistake. I didn't see all the other things you said... I thought you just were looking for modern settings.

Phantom Quest Corp (Supernatural Element)

Perfect Blue (You already mentioned this one)

Boogiepop Phantom (Modern/Supernatural Element)

Lain (Modern/Techno-Supernatural Element)

NieA_7 (Light Hearted - Science Fiction Element)

Maison Ikkoku (Romantic Comedy)

Orange Road (Romantic Comedy with supernatural Element)

Street Fighter titles (Spartan porn)

DNA^2 (Science Fiction Comedy)

Golden Boy (Ecchi Comedy)

Gunsmith Cats (Action)

Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) (Romantic)

Full Metal Panic is serious?

I'd recommend Witch Hunter Robin. It's like Noir, except with magic. Well, okay, its not. But its a serious show that isn't completely over the top if you can get past the magic thing.
