Lip synching

Post by CaTaClYsM » Wed Aug 21, 2002 11:05 pm

In video's when do find lip synching necesary?
What types of video's need it?
Is it dificult?
And what are some AMV's with very good lip synching jobs?
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

spPanda's Feuer Frei vid has good lip synch. Every single work in the song (I think) is synched.

there is no types of video's that NEED lip sync. if you so choose to do lip sync then you fit it in. and yes, it is difficult. but you can always find out for yourself by trying it.

lip syncing is a tedious job to do...

it takes alot of time and a good ear.

and sometimes you get lucky adn match it up perfectly the first time around... that's always funny.

Lipsyncing has to be part of the concept of the video.. I've never thrown lipsync into a video because I could (well except in the first version of closer to god because I was young and needed the money  ). Some videos can use it, some can't. Often times a video can be seriously hurt by lipsyncing. Some videos rely entirely on lipsyncing (not engel, because that also had stellar editing to back it up). I'll be perfectly honest that videos which are JUST lipsyncing videos I've found to be honestly very lacking. There was this one vid at Fanime called "Teenage anime nurse" which was the most stupid pile of male cow droppings I'd seen in the whole contest (which is sad too because at the very end of their video they have a little thank you to me and my video guides... yet their video looked like crap! How did my guides tell them to make a video like THAT?). It was nothing but a buncha nurse scenes lipsynced to the song - and THAT WAS IT. It was totally un-funny. Shinji's Secret by Ye-Olde Chuck-dogg was kinda funny but in a funny-once sorta way. It actually had a funny concept though.

I think there are some videos where it belongs and some which don't - and the only way to know which is which is to have a feel for the technique. It's an effect like anything else. Some videos don't and shouldn't have fancy effects (like my Cowboy Blues) just like some videos shouldn't have lipsyncing.
It comes down to the feel and purpose of the video. If lipsyncing can help you achieve the desires emotive response or thematic quality that you're going for, then use it. Otherwise, don't.

There was a 90% (or so) lipsync AMV at Sakura Con (to Sakura Diaries), and halfway through, I realised... This girl is onscreen for several minutes, and SHE NEVER BLINKS! (well, I remember she blinked at one part synced to some beat) I thought about adding blinking to the PPG in Right Now, but when I looked at the original scene, they all blinked at once. I thought that was kind of silly and just made it a stare-down. (I don't think Vash blinked in that scene, either)

When to?

I find you use lip synching when the music call for it. There were three Lost in Space videos at AX 01 and all three did lip synching to the one bit of talking in the video (If memory serves me right). This was because the music just called for the lip synching, because the voice is more talking, and thus more talking to the audience, so you need the AMV to reflect that so you have to have the lip synch where the character is talking directly to the audience.

My most recent video CSS has tons of lipsynching. I lip synched alot of the lines. However they all were lines that the voice really sounded as if they were 'talking' to the audience, and were at a different tone then the singing, or rest of the song. If the singing is used as another instrument in the song then lip synching isn't needed I find. It's when something is disconnected or jarring from the music that you use lip synching. It's also why you have things happen on the beats of music.
