DDR music, not in the project. Foolhardy?

So there's a song I'd like to use from DDR 6th Mix. It's not imperative; I could find something else. But before I even start thinking seriously about it, I thought I'd get the opinion off the street, so to speak.

I know everybody'd say "Oh, it's okay to use something the Project will use, has used or is using, nobody should make a case out of it." But seriously. That's best-case-scenario. In the back of my mind, I know that's not what I'd be thinking, even if I wouldn't say anything about it.

If someone used a DDR song, and they are in no way associated with the DDR Project, would you consider them a wannabe? I have to admit I kinda would, which is why I ask about everyone else's opinion.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way, and I have nothing to worry about.

(And no, joining the project is not an option, so don't even suggest it.)

It's just one song, it wouldn't be in even the same league as the Project, and it probably (if I'm guessing right) wouldn't be done in the same year that the Project does that mix. Still. It's DDR. They kind of own DDR, even if it's not official.

Thoughts?

Plent of people have done videos to DDR songs, songs that have even already been IN projects. LoopyChew's done the best Butterfly video to date, Hakura's done a fantastic Healing Vision video...

Just go for it. No-one really cares whether it's a DDR song or not.. not everyone associates DDR songs with the DDR project :P. Really... just do whatever you want.

Hell, I'll be doing a Pink Dinosaur video, eventually... ^^

That was possibly the strangest song in the entire DDR3 project. How in the hell did MiniGendo find that anime?

Well yeah, I know people do it; that's not what I asked. I asked if people will think I'm a big lam0r wannabe for doing it.

In other words, not can I, but should I.

But you did address that in the second part, so. I can't imagine that everybody doesn't associate DDR with, you know, DDR, seeing as it's the biggest thing in AMVs. Buuuuut I can take your word for it, since you know more about the scene than I do.

You shouldn't hold back on doing the video because of some (alleged) stigma that may be attached to doing so. Honestly, for some of the more popular songs there can be over 50 videos to it, and many people wouldn't think twice about using one of those. Imagine holding back only becuase, at some point in the future, the song has the chance of being used again. Besides, the DDR Project uses the Megamix, so unless you're doing that (I'm guessing that you plan on using either the short version from Disc 1 of the soundtrack or the full version, neither of which are the same as the Megamix) the song won't be completely identical anyways. You should go for it.

Completely agree with the previous posts: go for it. First, the song it's not going to be used for the next two years (given that the project will continue that far), second: why should you be considered a wannabe? I don't quite understand.

BTW... any chance of knowing this "secret" song? I am kinda curious

Well, even if it is in the future, I'd worry about looking like I'm trying to capitalize on their success, or copy from them by using DDR music. And a wannabe, which is pretty much what I just said - capitalizing on someone else's good name in order to get publicity for yourself. In other words it's the "me-too" attitude. I hate it when people do things like that.

Ordinary World. I'd thought of using the original (a song very near and dear to my heart), but the remix of course has a lot more energy and would probably make a more interesting video. All I do are boring slow videos, for the most part.

(and yes, I know the original has been done too, which is why it sucks all around. But I really want to work with this song in some form.

I wish I could be original.)

If you want to make a video, there shouldn't be any reason not to. Unless, of course, you get a Cease and Desist letter from the recording artist

There ISN'T any external influence that will bar you from doing what you want to do. I say "external" because it seems that the only influence keeping you from making this video originates from within your own mind.
