Anyone have experiance in Live Action Lip Synch?

Post by DJ_Izumi » Sat Oct 25, 2003 5:16 am

I've decided to make a little U turn in my current project, instead of Replacing Final Flight Of The Osiris with GITS:SAC, to replace it with something a little more photorealistic... Like real people. :P So I'll be using The Returner, a live action Japanese film. (Yes, I know this may have shocked some of you, but Japan does make live action movies and televison. I am not a witch, it's true. :P)

Now of course the rules for a live action lip synch are signifigantly different, since, well, you can take 4 frames of speach, 3 hours in premiere, and have Sailor Moon reciting the Gettysburg Address, but I've never seen a live action lip synch job that didn't look like a total lame dub job. Anyone have any suggestions, or should I just hope that a single line of speech miraculasly matches with the audio?

Live action lip synch is TOUGH

You can do it, but you cant really do it by frame manipulation like you can with anime because the head will be moving not just the mouth. I've tried before and it just doesnt work. The best you can do is hope that there are mouth movements in the footage which magically match those in your audio.

whoops- guess I left a cryptic message. The chances that the live action and animatid show off is soon and will likely determine the likelihood of an NA release.

Live action lip sync may not fare too well. C/o occas in prayers which helps somewhat but may spread infection.

Forget all the above - a little inebriated. I'll never pray cause there is no god, so I'll never ask out to him/her for help. Nothing wrong with prayers and doing what you believe but if you constantly look towards god to lead you, then you will take less and less personal responsibilities for his condition.

The only chance I'd give you is if there's a scene where you only see the mouth of the person who's talking... and then you still have to hope that mouth moves in the right ways so that you can edit the whole scene frame by frame to make the talking match the lyrics ... good luck finding anything like that.

If professional movie companies can't dub certain chinese action movies right (Rumble in the Bronx), what chance do we have? :x

The difference is they dont adjust the video frames in order for it to fit. Unlike anime they use the exact translation from japanese, hince why the mouth movments do not match while you still get the idea :)

the only way to pretty much do it is to dub your own line to match existing people talking. Even at that it will not provide acurate results. I suppose frame by frame amnipulation ios possible, but it would take extreame talents and knowlege of human speach patterns and more time than it's worth to mak it look convincing...

Looks like I was able to get a couple of flukes, it still looks like a dub, but a half decent dub. :)

I am absolutly certian that when I release this, there are going to be people saying 'WOW! That CG anime almost looked real! What was it!?'

And I'll be all 'Erm... that was live action. :| You're not allowed to like Japan anymore.'
