PMX is a new convention formed by Mike Tatsugawa, the former CEO of Anime Expo/SPJA (long story behind that). It's on the Memorial Day weekend, which I hear is at or near the same time as Fanime. PMX's focus is not just on Anime, but on other forms of media on both sides of the Pacific but primarilly on the Asian side though. It's not exclusively an Anime convention. It sounds too overbroad if you ask me, but we'll see how it turns out. Mike's got his work cut out for him. Hopefully it'll keep him out of trouble...

It's rumored that Mike formed PMX to steal thunder from and compete against AX, but he'll deny it. They're shaping up to be pretty similar so far though. A lot of PMX's programming and events seem to parallel AX, and much of PMX's staff are former AX staffers (there's a few staffers from SakuraCon as well, I hear). They're also at the same location (the Anaheim Hilton and Convention Center), although Mike initially wanted the Long Beach Convention Center (which is where AX used to be at) but it was booked. A lot of pictures on the PMX site are from AX New York too.

I really have to laugh at some of the things I'm seeing Mike post on the PMX message board though. Comments like:

"I often see the complaint that AX is sterile and not very fun. I was wondering what fans think PMX can do to avoid that."

Hmm. I wonder if he ever considered who was originally responsible for that.

On a similar note, while a lot of people complain about AX being a corporateish convention, PMX is specifically a for-profit organization. Doesn't get more corporate than that.

I guess the question is how the music video contest will be conducted... Since the con is a corporate entity, It sounds like they'll get some guy from the tech department to run it who's never made any AMVs... Well, I suppose we'll see... Tow major cons withing a month of each other at the same located.... This will most likely split the fans and be bad for both...

I don't think it'll split the fans. Anime Expo will continue to have fan drive because fans know what its about. It's in the name. On the other hand, even after reading up on PMX I don't have a clue what they're totally about yet, aside from being perhaps an AX lite. It looks like they're trying to be a jack of all trades. For all Mr. Joe Q. Public knows PMX could be some sort of press convention. Plus the name sounds too generic, uninspired, and sterile.

As for as their AMV competition goes, Megazone is somewhat experienced and will probably end up running it since he ran it before at AXNY. I didn't go to AXNY so I don't know how well that turned out.

That would be a big mistake in my mind since that person is running Programming in the first place.. the person running the contedt needs to be dedicated to only doing that! Peroblem is when it's assigned to someone with an already full plate....

Um. I was there- as a matter of fact I was one of the techs running it. The contest consisted of us playing all of the contest submissions off their individual submitted VHS tapes (or, in Pat's case, off his spiffy DVD) and then MZ announcing what the video was and what the next one would be while we switched tapes. About halfway through the audience made it pretty clear his announcing wasn't particularly useful, and we just played the rest of the contest with only the delay of us switching out the tapes. There was also no real 'cut' of the videos done, which meant the contest was quite long and not always the highest quality. There was also a completely unintended problem of one of the last of the 'legacy' AMVs we showed to kill time while waiting for the ballots and MZ to arrive using the same song as the first of the contest AMVs that was shown. -_-;;

Truth told, of all the contests I've seen in the last year since starting going to cons again, it was probably one of the least well-run. Heck, both Tekkoshocon & Anime Boston's contests- both first year cons- were run considerably better from an organizational standpoint, both having the entire contest compiled either onto a master tape or master DVDs. It helped considerably that in both cases, there was someone specifically assigned to the contests, and also in both cases that person was an editor themselves.
