strange yuu yuu hakusho names

Post by methinksIMweird » Sat Oct 18, 2003 12:17 am

its so weird, but my cuz from the philippines came over and we were talkin bout anime. anyways, so then he said that in the p.i. the yuu yuu hakusho names are VERY different. like instead of koenma its jericho, and instead of botan its charlene. or something like that. and someone named alfred. its strange.

All I know is that Hiei is Vincent. And the Phillipine version of YYH has a Kurama/Botan pairing - they completely rewrote most of the Kurama scenes so it looks like they're a settled couple. Heracy, I tell you. :?

And which one is Kurama?
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.

Uh....Kurama's the redhead (and the silverhaired youko) - if you mean his name...I think he would be Alfred. But I can't say for sure. :?

[I haven't actually seen this version, I've just talked to people who have it - mostly the ones who claimed there was an established Kurama/Botan pairing - I didn't see what they were talking about until they explained the differences in what they say in the Phillipine version versus the japanese version - they changed a lot more than just names. :shock: ]

They can DO that?! Edit episodes to do stuff like that?! And what's up with those names? AAAH!!! ::flees:: Sorry...I just think it's seriously strange. And I do NOT approve. :evil: I hope they don't do stuff like that in the US. My friend in Panama hasnt' mentioned anything like it.

Yep, just watch the dubbed version of Sailormoon to see all the great 'guys made girls' examples. The sad fact is, Kurama is effeminate and they needed to make an 'established' pairing in the anime. So they just change what the characters say and use those scenes of Botan looking worried to make it into a romance. Not really hard to do.

But yes, makes me love the Japanese version even more. ^_^;

If you think that editting job is bad, you should've seen how UPN spliced Tekkaman Blade into "Teknoman". They changed all of the names of all the characters, the gender and sexual orientation of one character (which was probably for the best), made their own version opening title and end credits, and finally only showed half of the series.

Then of course, you have "Robotech", which was a splicing of how many different, unrelated animes?

Wow. I knew about the changes in Sailor Moon (my first anime series in 3rd grade, heh) and other "Kid" animes like Cardcaptor Sakura but I didn't know that was done so often...or so drastically. Jeez.

My buddy has the Hong Kong bootlegs of YYH (he got them before they came out here) and the English subs are horrific. Through the entire series they have Kurma and Hei's names backwards, they call "sprit energy" "sprit gas", and parts that are clearly spoke in English such as "game over" and subbed as "Now we reached end". Not to mention on the box it says "not to be broadcast in public places such as oil rigs". Go figure.
