best way to get footage is to buy the anime DVD or laserdisc or vhsTape (depending on accessability) No it is not legal to Download anime; subtitles or not. Export laws and such inluding copywrite infringments and all that. Fansubs and Chinese imports are bad in their own ways. I see that the others have touched these bases so I just added to the prattle

Sharing vids that use stolen footage from dvds that you own is also illegal. Want anime footage to use that is legally obtained? Go buy the rights from the company that produced the original anime - then you'll be set.
[Of course, you'll have to do the same for the music, but you can always make a silent av - anime video sans the illegal music.]

.....the cheelala speaks
You can use dvd footage. like either buy them or rent them from your local blockbuster. However, ripping them to the hard drive is a COMPLETELY different story. Especially if you are like me and avisynth hates you with a burning fiery passion. ..... but i think that's just me. Yeah, it is. I think.....
ANYWAY! moving on....
DVD=best footage
VHS= ok if it's all you have and it's semi-ok quality
subtitles= NOOOOO! AHHHHHH! DON'T USE THEM!
TV-captured footage= see above ....(cheelala is a hypocrite....BUT I NEVER RELEASED THAT ONE! so it's semi ok)

All of these methods are no where near the best.
See, the best way is to get Ghibli, Gainax, Bones, Sunrise, Production I.G. etc to make the footage for your video. You tell them exactly what you want in each scene and let them animate it using all the latest techniques and animation talent.
I'm hoping to use this method as soon as possible

While you're there, get Beethoven to come back from the grave, get some modern music experience and write a guitar/vocals piece for the likewise revived Jimi Hendrix to perform for the music.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:All of these methods are no where near the best.

I think after IWIWAL, Gainax will either do whatever you want or ban you from going within 100 yards of their offices.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:All of these methods are no where near the best.

Instead of being an obnoxious biznatch like some of you have been, lemme try and answer this little one's question:
First of all, if you're new, welcome to animemusicvideos.org ^_^ I hope you like it here. Now, onto answer your question. The best way you can get footage is probably to use DVD ripping. It's the most commonly used method here on this site. However, do not feel barred to this. I've seen a lot of good videos that use downloaded footage (for example, Omnistrata's videos before "Blue Sky Brings Tears" all used downloaded clips, great videos). If you would like to try using DVD ripping, you might want to check out AbsoluteDestiny & ErMaC's Technical Guides to All Things Audio and Video. Good luck!!!!
