Over population of vids

Post by Night-Crawler » Tue Oct 14, 2003 9:28 pm

U know what i think nemox's is right , there is abit of a buldge in the amount of amvs coming in , especially dbz ones. i know its ways i joined sometime last month , but my email got hacked i joined early:P but since 2002 to now , theres like 43 uploads a day! and a good 20 of em are dbz. at this rate the org is going to end yp consuming itself! , nothing we can really do about it either though so thats abit of a problem

So what you like thats why i posted!

Why does it matter what's being uploaded? The Donut is the Donut, and all eligible members can upload whatever they want so long as it's within the regulations.

The problem is that it'll all eventually wind up collapsing in on itself, mostly because there's no way the server will be able to handle the bandwidth strain.

What Phade ought to do, is only keep uploaded videos up for download for a period of like 1 month and then after that they'll get dropped unless they have a certain star rating let's say. And obviously the crappy DBZ ones aren't gonna get more than 1 star or so, so it'll all work out good.

On a side note, it's been my observation that anyone who releases more than one amv at a time, is a bad creator. Meaning crappy quality, unoriginality & very poor editing.

Phade wrote:Hey All,

Yes, people putting up completely unrelated videos and such is a pain and really annoying, but there are currently two factors that are keeping them there for the moment.

The first is that is a big pain in the bootay to delete a video entry. I've made a tool to remove video files, but the database entry is much more complicated. I'm working on a tool for that, but it is still in the works. (Having a functioning programmers group would come in real handy for speeding that along.)

The second is that there is not an immenent need to have space created on the server. The Donut currently has several hundered gigabytes free. Removing a 30-50G crap video file isn't going to make that much difference. When the server starts to get to the 90% capacity mark, then I would worry about it.

I'm planning on creating some tools to make all the much more automated than the "manual" removal that is required now. The system will be easy for members to report bad entries and easy (just a few clicks) for me to "deal" with them. These tools should be ready before the end of the year, just in time for the Viewers Choice Awards.

Time is really really tight for me right now (I'm moving AGAIN, but this time it will be for an extended stay). Removing crap entries is low priority at the moment. Soon the priority will rise. In the mean time, take note of what shouldn't be around for when the system is up and running to "officially" report them. You may also politely let them know that they are doing a not-so-good thing by putting in bad entries.

I feel your pain. Sorry for the delay.

and I think Phade's more concerned about golden donut violations than dbz videos.

Elitism sucks at least as much as DBZ videos.
So forget this idea.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but there *could* be a way to make that star rating idea work. Not a time period, since some anime vids use anime that may increase in popularity and get a sudden flood of downloads after more than a month of being here. But the star ratings should be of some use. It would be like the banner votes - once 100 star ratings (or 200 if you want to be absolutely sure) have been given, any vid that ranks at 1 (or maybe even 2) could be weeded out. That isn't the same as elitism - you aren't cutting things out because one or two people think they aren't worthy. It would be more like 200 voting members gave the vid the very worst possible score.

But that's only if the org really *does* suffer a sudden backwash and need to be filtered. I'm quite satisfied with the way it is now - 'archiving all amvs' regardless of whether everyone likes them or not. Whether it's a rush of DBZ, a rush of Love Hina, a rush of 'Bring me to life' - it doesn't matter, they're all accepted for being what they are - amvs.

There are still good LH concepts there currently working on my latest
and probally last true project... Becuase of economic, school concerns,
plus the fact that i'm becoming way to picky about the footage and
what message I'm trying to convey.... But, even after all that it'll probally
get buried under a thousand newbe vids :(
