My average connection is 52K, 24 in the afternoon when it kicks me offline (nearly the same time every day, mind you - I blame the ISP). I had a faster connection when I joined from college, but I don't know what it was (don't really care what it was called). As far as I'm concerned, internet access is a luxury. I pay 200 a year to have unlimed access with my simple little modem, that's all I need.
Rather than say modem users are losers or pathetic, you might ask how many of the people with fast connections actually pay the bills to have them. My guess is the average is 1/6 of the people bragging - with the majority being provided by parents, school, etc.
Show me the average person on here balancing rent, utilities, food, and necessities and still afording some high speed connection that's namely used for luxury and I'll spring the extra money to replace my modem. Until then, I consider myself set. Slow speed or not, it hasn't stopped me from downloading amvs or anything else I want. The only thing I can't get would be fansubs, and I don't want those to begin with.

I pay approx $70 dollars a month to have DSL (includes my home phone as I get DSL through Bellsouth) I also pay my own rent, food, utilities, car payment, car insurance, as well as my college expenses (as a state employee I get tution reimbursment but I pay all other expenses), which are considerable as I drive 80 miles one way to school and gas now cost a fortune. Its a little harder on me now that I am on my own (ex moved out last month). It helps that I just got a raise and promotion at work but I still have to be creative with my financial planning.Arigatomyna wrote:Rather than say modem users are losers or pathetic, you might ask how many of the people with fast connections actually pay the bills to have them. I see how it could be considered a luxury to have high speed internet access but, I do use the internet A LOT both for my research for school as well as one of my only entertainment sources. Living in a very small town there is next to nothing to do here, and being by myself now I spend a lot of time working on my computer and trying to get my website going. I guess its all in where your priorities are, I used to have a T1 connection when I lived in Jersey and I guess I kinda got spoiled by it.
But as long as I can afford it, and I guess thats the key here, because I have been so broke in the past I could not even afford a phone to get dial up connection, Ill be paying for the DSL until I can get something better.
