Right, MJ. I fully agree, it just tickles my fancy how "Thou Shalt Not use downloaded footage" is suggested, when the subtitle removal guide is , in my guesstimate, most widely used by people using downloaded footage. Thats like saying:
Here a big shiny red button. Only push it when there is a leap year.
...
Of course someone is gunna push it! They are gunna butten mash that thing till the cows come home!
Meh, pretty much thats just my 2 cents.

sure, but the point i wanted to get across was, downloaded footage is illegal. Never mind that you do OWN the material.ANTDrakko wrote:Lyrs. I own, keep in mind that key word, OWN the rights to use that footage for my own personal use without the gain of profit by using their licence. Hence, not illegal.

what about fansubs then? Grey area you say?
I'm still on the side that says that modern fansubs are capable of delivering well AMV-wise. Ethically, yea, it's not right. Technically, it's not a massive minus. In the end, it still comes down to how well the thing is edited...
Myself, I don't care. I won'd openly condone or promote the idea of this nor will I condemn it. I just want to see good AMV's. Good footage won't save a bad AMV and modest footage, usually, won't kill a good one (IMHO)

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Keep in mind that it isn't a rule, it's just an 'ethical guideline.' There's nothing against the rules about using downloaded footage on this site - I've asked before. You just can't talk about *where* you downloaded the footage.
If it were a rule, and not a 'guideline,' there would be a lot less amvs here. So lecture away, but don't say it's a rule. I've been assured by mods here that while the official 'forum rules' say not to use it, no one will remove your video just because you *do* use it. This argument came up on another post in this forum, do a search and it should show up - it's a guideline only.
As for subtitled footage being only fansub/downloaded things, I've also used dvd sources that had subtitles - again it was song lyrics. Seems to be a common problem, so they can have the 'subtitle removal' and still hold their 'ethical' superiority for not supporting downloaded footage.
Anyway, just wanted to remind people about the difference between a rule (in which case violating the rule would result in punishment - no one gets punished for having vids with downloaded footage, they don't even have the vids removed no matter how obvious it is that it was downloaded) and an 'ethical guideline' (in which case you'll get lectures and look bad before your peers, but you and a good 45% of the org population will continue doing the same thing because it's just a matter of ethics and the final choice is up to you).
I still think it should be a rule. But I don't have any say in the matter.
