Out of the eight I have so far:

Started with visual: 3
Started with audio: 5

Going by my whole bunch of potential ideas, too, normally they start with the song. Often I'll have a vague category in mind first ("I want to do something dramatic with series XYZ" or "I want to try a profile of ABC"), but it starts with a moment when the song "suggests" something out of the blue.

The song and anime find you. At least that's how I edit. When I actively go out to find something, it turns out to be crap (*cough* Evolution *cough*). I don't make a concerted effort to find something for a video. I just listen to a lot of music and once in awhile a song and anime combination clicks, I see some scenes and I start from there.

all my ideas come from watching an anime and thinking of a song all of a sudden, listen to music, and be reminded of an anime.

Myself, I always chose the anime first. As you can see everyone has a diffrent perspective on it, I guess it all depends on how you best get your idea.

I go with the music first, then I think about what anime would probably fit into it.

I'm too new at this AMV stuff, and it show's:

first one - Audio first ( ABBA ) then Video . . but changed the Audio on upload.

second - The song was just too silly to pass-up and the two Anime's didn't do
the "It Take's A Thief" theme any good ( but it was cute ^^ - hehe )

third one - tryed a new concept; it failed!
- took a song and had the Video "react" to the words ( Simon Say's kinda thingy )
