etsuko_x wrote:Aww man... Combustion? You got quite a bit of dough to be able to use that dude. :P Well, I find After Effects only useful for really great motion graphics. Not a matter of just scaling and playing with filters. The stuff that couples with AE very well would have to be, Photoshop, Illustrator, and how to forget, glorious 3D. LoL! :P
I got to use a legit copy of Combustion via a friend who had ties to an art school. It just does certain things so much better than AE. I used it on my Faceless Hill video - http://www.aluminumstudios.com/combusti ... osite2.jpg

I also had to Combust a few scenes in my DDR track for this year ;-)

Uhmm lets see, My opinion is that if you cant tell what is going on its too much effects heh. Other than that its all cool. Now there are effects vids where I go "huh?" and other where I go "I get it". Sometimes i like it sometimes I dont..

I havent used AE but I plan a FX vid some time soon.. time gone...
heh.

Ahh, Combustion is sweet, but deep. So much to learn...

Apparently, Will can even use it to fix screwed up quotes in posts.

I didn't read this entire thread in detail ... but something I don't think I've seen discussed in detail is the concept of decorative effects vs effects that are an integral part of the video.

For example, I would consider Euphoria the ultimate example of pure decorative effects that have little value beyond stimulation for the eyes. Whereas in Night Owl's Mad World video so called "effects" were used to create and build the video itself. I see the two uses as extremely different.

The decorative effects I personally find to be annoying and the type of thing that will make viewers tired of fancy editing fast. Whereas I love the artistic use of effects to build and construct the video or a motif within which the video takes place ... My videos Dreams of Red, House on the Moon, and Closer all used "effects" to give them an appearence and constrcut them. My Totoro video (Stoopid, which I hate btw) was just lame decorative effects. These vids are a little old and not at the same density as some modern effects laden videos, but I think they are examples of what I'm talking about.

Of course I do think decorative effects have a place in rhythm/upbeat and comedy videos. I love the AWA DDR project and my video B4U goes overboard with sillyness (I posted a screen shot from it back earlier in this thread.)

Discussing effects is difficult. I like to distinguish between decorative effects and just intricate editing.
