If you're looking for something permanent, and you have a wide taste in anime, I'd recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. As far as I can tell, it has just about everything (except mecha and sex).
You get your action in the tournaments, your family drama with the siblings, bonding between the many different characters, the cute girls, the skirt-chaser (Yusuke and his pervy antics with Keiko), the idiot humor (Kuwabara), plenty of drama (Kurama), detailed storylines in the 4 arcs that all connect but can still be watched separately, two movies (and the tournament special if you just want to cap the best fight scenes), romance all over the place (but mixed in with everything else, so it's not bad) - with all sorts of relationships (sweet, funny, angsty, disturbing).
About the only complaints I have for the series is that the animation is a little old (though it gets better later on, and the long movie is downright pretty). And it starts out slow, with the final episode being anti-climactic. But for 112 episodes it doesn't drag out much at all, and you get to see the main characters (and even most of the minor characters) go through all the paces, from comically playful to fullblown depression.
So far every anime I've watched has a theme that I can identify somewhere in YYH. For example, the harem idea comes out with one of the fighters in the dark tournament, the Yusuke/Sensui battle plays like one of those infamous DBZ fights, the subplot of Kurama and Shuichi reminds me of Please Teacher, Itsuki's story is reminiscent of Angel Sanctuary, the Youko Kurama theme reminds me of Rurouni Kenshin (manslayer turned nice guy), the Reikai Tante (spirit detectives) can be put next to Gundam Wing, the Sensui arc really reminds me of the last part of Evangelion, and so on.
It just has a very diverse plot, with various well-explained characters. This is the only long anime I'd give a 9 to. ^_^

Have you seen Inuyasha? I don't know how many episodes it's up to, but it's pretty long.
I don't think I've seen an anime longer than yyh (since I don't count the Christian arc in RK) except maybe DBZ - and a lot of people don't like that.
What anime stretches past 112 episodes? And is good all the way through? I'm sure they're out there, but I don't think I've seen them yet...

Somehow YYH actually kept me entertained dubbed and edited on toonami, how this is i still am very unsure of but i kind of lost the goodness when i flipped on the channel the watch the episode begging the final fight with team toguro and its freaking episode 1. I may be interested in buying the dvds but then again, the longer the anime, the more money
