What ever happened to them...
what ever happened to the meat and potatoes of anime series. Lately the only thing Iv seen are these crap fluff candy and sweets anime series. We got Chibits, Onegai Twins, Ai Yori Aoshi "Da Capo" and all these other animes that are cutesy and harem oriented. And don't even get me started on these incest animes they spew out. Japan is seriously messed up. Whatever happened to animes with serious well developed plots. Such as Cowboy Bebop, Gainax animes in general, Macross, ect. I havent seen a good new anime in ages, anime is seriously losing its grip on what it use to be.

Well, I can't say if I've ever seen an anime you would consider having a 'well developed' plot, but I know what you mean about the ones I see around these days. The 'cutsey' stuff and the harem-flicks seem to be more prevelant (at least from half the vids I've seen in the last few months). But Bebop has quite a following, so if it's got that developed plot you're talking about - it's also got viewers who enjoy it. I'd say the fluff is for the younger people who just want to smile or watch bouncing boobies or something. And overall there seem to be a lot more younger anime fans these days. They're just selling the people what they want to see.

Perception is subjective.
Things are not as bad as they seem. They are worse than that.
They are also better than that.
Different times, different trends, different perspectives. Nothing is uniform, either. There's new stuff of different kinds coming out, and just because one genre is dominating, it doesn't mean that's how it'll always be or that there aren't exceptions. And really, this hasn't been going on for too too long.
Plus, don't forget that for some, this is a time they're enjoying (perception is subjective - there are those who are in 'harem heaven' in these times)...

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Harem is good but not too much, its been spewed out so many times its no longer good. to make my message more blunt im trying to say enough Fan Service. Thats all it is. Sure a bouncing boobs are good here and there but common. I cant say the arts getting any better also cause it all looks the same. You can show me 5 different cast pictures from different series and I wouldnt be able to tell them apart, you say nothing is uniform, well its becomming.

Well, but I can usually tell the difference
In any case, I strongly doubt that everything else is dead, you just have to dig deeper to get it these days. And before you know it, it might be back on the top (the mecha genre is still not dead... the weird/depressing storylines aren't yet history... there's still hope)

I agree on GITS:SAC, Scrapped Princess, and Last Exile. Last Exile left me in awe at the animation quality.Hitori wrote:There are other series I like which include: Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex, Last Exile, Piano, Scrapped Princess, Stratos4, and Texhnolyze. Many people don't talk about them...

Fanservice in anime is common, but there are all types of fanservice, so it can appeal to a wide audience. I think one of the problems is that when you're in a place like this, majority rules. I hate to generalize, but right now I don't feel too 'off' saying that there are three types of amvs coming out - each one based on similar anime titles.
There's the fanservice vids, using anime like Love Hina, and a lot of other titles I've never heard about - the main plot being either girls in funny sexual positions, or one guy surrounded by numerous girls in funny sexual situations where he gets beat up for being a pervert (Goldenboy vids would fall into this category as well). Then there's the 'action' vids - meaningless violence in anime, like Vampir Hunter D, Hellsing, Trigun, DBZ (though some of these fall into the third category depending on which scenes are used) - this is fanservice as well, appealing to the viewer's desire to see violence, bloodshed and general gore. The third section would be the drama, which can range over lots of anime titles, including the romance ones and the angsty Trigun or Bebop vids - these are another sort of fanservice, appealing to people who want to see characters in emotional turmoil.
I think the problem is that a large majority prefer the action and the humor (hentai) anime because it isn't deep, there's no need to think or be bothered by what you're watching. Keep in mind the audience, mostly young, large majority male, bored people who want a quick rush from either comedy or violence. The call for drama and deep plots in anime isn't as strong, so there arent as many people who watch that sort of thing. And with less call for it, there's less anime made to suit that audience.
I don't think the level of anime is dropping, if anything is going sour, it would be the fans and what they want *out* of anime. All the creators are doing is giving people what they want.

Very good point there Arigatomyna. Fanservice is something a bit broader than just sexual connotations... And there is a lot of things at anime specifically aimed at the simpler interests of the viewer. Suppose this is what separates the art from the entertainment, the popular culture from the mass entertainment industry.
Which all makes sense I guess
In popular culture, our artists sing to us in our own voice.
In mass culture they shout what we want to hear.
In popular culture, the artist calls on the highest part in all of us.
In mass culture, the artist addresses the lower parts of what we are.
But, I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. I assume what you're seeing on the screen is what audiences want to see, for the most part.
