windows logo?

Post by Arigatomina » Fri Jul 11, 2003 11:18 am

Yeah, it's a dumb computer question, but isn't really concerned with 'video' per say, so I'm dumping it here. I just finished a long nasty system recovery - complete reboot back to the settings I had when I got the computer, and I went to upgrade one of my files since it replaced it with the lower version. Now, the file is made for Windows XP, and that's what my computer is, but when I tried to install the upgrade I was told the software was not compatible and that it didn't have the proper signature from Microsoft, so it would not be installed.

Now, I know it *does* have the signature, and it *is* compatible, but since I don't know why it's reading it wrong, the easiest thing to do would be to disregard that setting that halts anything without the proper 'compatibility.' Does anyone know where you change the settings for that on Windows XP? I must have done it once before, because I've loaded a lot of software that wasn't signed by Microsoft (nearly all my editing software). But I can't for the life of me figure out where the setting is on this computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. All I've managed to find out so far is that the 'Designed for Windows XP Logo' is a 'wonderful' way to keep your computer safe from unqualified program files. I can't find anything on how to turn the safety measure off. :?

I'm not that great with computers and I'm just going out on a limb here cuz from my experience this is what helped me..... *shrugs*

Most of the settings for the computer are in the control panel which is under the "settings" part of the start menu. I believe that that should be the right place that you would find the information to change the settings are.......

I'm not sure... it's just a suggestion..... ^^;;

ok!!!! i got some info from my majorly smart dad... ::huggles dad:: ^^ if you have an anti-virus system, (like Norton Works or whatever) it may be reading your program as a virus and so it will not let you upgrade. If you go to "settings" "control panel" and go to "run and install programs" you should turn off the anti virus system and it should work......

if it doesn't..... get back to me and i'll ask my dad again for extra instructions!

It's prolly updating some drivers. Just click the "Continue" button to allow the files to update. The boxes you are getting is just Windows complaining about the unauthorized files.

If you want to bypass File Protection entirely, simply copy the files over to the dllcache.

Wow, thanks for the advice! I tried updating the driver settings so they bypass the 'windows logo' protection, so that's not it. I've changed every setting in the control panel I could get my little hands on so none control what software is uploaded. I *haven't* tried the virus protectors yet, so I'll do that next (and I need to do that anyway - did it the last time I had to do a system recovery and forgot to set it again, so thanks). The one suggestion I don't think I can do is the one of copying the file over th 'dllcache' - I'm not sure what the dllcache is. >.< But the file I'm trying to run is an exe file that merely upgrades wmm to version 2 instead of version 1. I got it off the microsoft homepage, so I *know* it's compatible. But I'm pretty sure I have to actually run it in order to upgrade - the computer only gave that warning the first time I tried to run the program, since then it says it installed the upgrade, but it didn't. If I restore the system back to before the first time I tried the upgrade (with the settings changed again to leave software alone), it gives that same warning the first time and then pretends to install it if I keep trying. I just haven't found the right setting to change yet.

If anyone wants to tell me about this dllcache, please do. Otherwise I'm going to play with my virus settings and keep screwing around in the control panel till I kill the computer. ^_^;;

I have a solution.

Kill XP. Chop it up in a blender and feed it to your fish. Then feed your fish to a cat.

Works everytime.
