Funny thing about that. When people asked Anno about Kaoru being gay, he was quite surprised. He never intended for him to be seen as gay.

Yeah, I think the intention was just that he was supposed to be an incarnation of a perfect human in many ways, including that he felt a strong platonic love for Shinji. He was not phased by the situation due to his general all-round confidence, but Shinji was uncomfortable and awkward due to his general inexperience with people expressing love for him. And who knows, maybe Shinji was gay? :P

Actually on-topic, as pretty much everyone else has said, it's your right not to like something without condemning the lifestyles of the people who are featured therein.

Uhh...yeah...cause homophobia only exist in the America....right....Listen, the US aint perfect, but it is getting way to much shit lately while all other countries are acting like they are filled with fucking angels. Sure america still has some interable people in it, but has a country its still gone out of its way a lot more than most countries to try to be fair to everyone, even if it hasnt exactly fully suceeded(mainly cause its not possible to succeed at that). Im not asking you to be a no holds bar mindless patriot here, but give the country a break everyone once in while, geeze. Im sorry to seem to go off on you specificly, but i just see this stuff everywhere now, people have just become like relentless with the WE MUST SHOW AMERICA ISNT PERFECT shit recently.

Well ok, I retract that, I was just saying that hey, for a country that has such a high opinion of itself it seems to be quite flawed, whichever though. That study that was just done with like 25 countries was mostly opposed to the USA, I'm just going along with what my feelings are, thats it. Well, sure america has sort of tried, it's failed miserably though. You won't go to a country like canada or the UK and see any giant racial gaps or voids, it's just not like that around here. Gay marriges are also legal in Canada now, so thats just another step towards equality.

Equality is not impossible, but its really hard, especially when a large part of the population is so thickheaded that they can't grasp simple concepts like difference of race or ethnicity.

What's this about racial gaps? I live near a small bunch of Korean businesses. My landlady is Korean. I have Mexicans around me. I worked with black, gay, Latin, and east Indian people at my last job just two weeks ago. Most of my city is this way. Not to say there aren't racial concentrations, but it's not all one color, then another down here.

In Britain, most of the shooting going on occurs in black neighborhoods, DESPITE guns (especially the MAC-10s, sawed offs, and handguns used) being banned. What's the government response? BAN GUNS AGAIN. Not look at the root causes of gangs. And ironically, Britain (or London, at least) is getting more totalitarian, with video cameras everywhere because of the street crime and "It's for the good of society".

"Evolved" Europe wants to ban "demeaning" advertising, as well as spanking children. And this is just the start. Not to mention that they have their fair share of anti-Semitic leftists or scary right-wingers, who are slowly but surely on the rise. Maybe they will get power, maybe not.

Europe will be facing an immigration backlash in the next five years, I predict. It's already been occuring in Germany, with the small right/Neo-Nazi groups beating up Turkish immigrants and other ethnicities. Le Pen, in France, had a disturbing number of votes. The Netherlands and Austria have both had prominent far right wing and near-Nazi politicians.

Canada, they have their Chinatowns and Little Koreas, their Indian sections, their WASP neighborhoods, for sure. Maybe the cities are more diverse, but I bet skin darker than lily-white practically disappears out on the prairie, just like in the US - or maybe more so, for all we know.

According to the CIA world factbook, 66% of Canadians are of white European descent (British Isles, French, and other Europeans). In the US, 77%. Whoo, an 11% difference. A little large, but not terribly so.

So yeah, I see nothing that shows that Canada, the UK, or the EU is any better for race than the US.

It is for certain, though, that elsewhere in the world, if you're a different race, sexuality, whatever, you probably won't get very nice treatment, so the US, UK, et al can high five each other at least that much.

On Homosexuality, Tolerance, and Racism

Post by [AV] ChOjIn 69 » Thu Jun 26, 2003 8:37 am

First of all, lets get gack to the topic at hand. Like so many people pointed out lethel, what probably turned them off to you in the first place was your use of the word "homophobe." I'm pretty sure that unlike Omni, you are not a hard core homophobe and a probably merely uncomfortable with the notion of boy-boy love. (Omni by the way only has a big problem with those who chose to "limit" themselves to man-love, he doesnt seem to care as much about male bisexuals or lesbians). The word itself, however, is extremely offensive and should never be used in casual conversation unless those people are your close friends, and even then it should never really be said over the internet, since it is really hard to tell if someone is just joking, being sarcastice, etc. On the other hands, if these people were really truly your friends, they would 1) have apologized to you by now or 2) immediately understood what you were trying to say in the first place and taken only minor/no offense at all by your comment. Basically the best way to deal with this is to let the whole thing cool off for a while before attempting to clear the air between you. If they are still pissed off about the whole thing, then they are no more than close minded fundementalists idiots that can go F!@k themselves.

A note on the perception of America in the international limelight:
It is not because that America is any more or less bigotted, racist, and closeminded overall than anywhere else in the world. It is because that this country possesses such freedoms and such reach that any view, racist, facist, irreverent, or otherwise can be aired with little restriction to a very large audience. It is precisely because we, as Americans are so free with our speech and that our country has such international influence, that any bigot, racist , idiot (ahem...pat buchanan), with money can make themselves heard with impunity. It doesnt help either that these closeminded morons tend to be more vocal than those with important and relevant things to say. But you have to realize, that, when one dominates the international spotlight like America does, EVERY LITTLE STUPID THING is going to be seen by our enemies and allies alike and knowing what we know about human nature in general, the majority are going to focus more on our faults than our virtues.

BRAVO!

ChOjIn, that was a great post!

Therefore, I will skip what I was going to say, because you summed it up very well...

I'll just make one quick aside on that little Evangelion thing that popped up.

Kaworu is not a homosexual character in the sense of the plot of Evangelion. However... I don't want to burden this thread with discussion on this point, I will be happy to talk about it in private messages or e-mail... but let's keep this thread on the track it's been on.

Once again... BRAVO, ChOjIn!

8)

Ironically I was over on Anime News Network yesterday and there is a thread going on about how some of the scenes Americans assume is gay overtones is due to cultural differences, and nothing to do with sexual preference.

I made a comment that I had no idea what Yaori was and watched the first episode of Gravitation. I said I thought the animation was good, music was good, and the story was interesting but wasnt for me, I wanted cute anime girls like Urd and Mutsumi. If Gravitaion would have had mecha I might have been interested.

I was called a homophobe because...Im not sure why. I thought it was good, I pretty much said as much but its not the kind of anime I like. I want anime with cute girls and mecha.

Seems if I was a homophobe I wouldnt have liked VanDread which I feel has some gay overtones.
