AMV canabalism.........

Post by AtomicWeezleman » Thu Jun 19, 2003 5:08 pm

Ok, the making of AMVS, its not the easiest of things, there dvd's to buy, music to get hold off etc However, one of my vids contains scenes from another AMV, i have not premiered this amv yet. The question is, is this wrong, my copy of the piece of animation has subs on it, this one didnt. There was no effects used, its just one scene....... is it wrong to canabalise??

It's my understanding that it's looked down on. If for no other reason than you should own the footage you use.

Yes it very wrong. First off it drives down the quality of the footage, second its kind of like stealing. It’s as bad if not worse than dling footage. If you want to do so, don't openly admit it. Or atleast shroud yourself in asbestos to ward off the flames first.

If you know the creator, you can usually ask them if they still have the huffy of the AMV or the VOBs of the series/scene you're looking for.

If the scene you used truly doesn't have any editing in it at all, go ahead and take it, but ask for the huffy first. WuWu gets his Kenshin clips from me because he asks. And most of the time I give away.

Now, if the scene DOES have editing in it, ask for the VOB. The creator may still have it on his/her hardrive if you're lucky. Otherwise, it's completely wrong because you're stealing some one else's long hours of work and effort.

Also, if you don't get the huffy of the scene, it does derive the quality, depending upon the codec of file type on how much...

It is extremely looked down upon especially if the creator finds out on his or her own. I would personally be pissed. I would see it this way. We say that its wrong to use downloaded footage, this should also apply towards amv. No one ever said that making amvs was cheap, personally I dont buy dvds to make amvs I usually make amvs because I liked watching the anime so much. Even if your dead broke and cant afford source footage, you shouldn't resort to STEALING from others amvs.

But you could always ask the creator politely. ;)

Hey, there's no harm in trying. At worst, you'd get flamed. At Mediocre, your email will just be ignored...

If its is unedited footage , then who cares .. I used amv footage for my first video (when i was just curious about amvs and had no footage) and have not used it since then . The reason being that the quality really does go to shit when you do that . In case anyone has forgotten using anime footage (or any other footage for that matter) IS STEALING. I do not condone the use of other peoples ripped footage, but realistically, what are any of us going to do.

Using footage that has effects though , or sequences that have been edited together is another manner , and should not be allowed.
BAD EDITORS !

-all the newbs who want to use ripped DBZ footage for their vids ... GO RIGHT AHEAD ..... no one cares about DBZ vids enough anyway.

hehehe

The problem with that is 'How do you know what's been edited, and what hasn't?'
You may think you know many times, but there's just no way you can tell sometimes. Especially if you're 'cannabalizing' something you haven't seen before.
Everyone is not the same as you.
Get over it.
And lighten up.

Or better yet, just try to find the person who made the amv and ask if you can use it. Chances are he won't care much. And if the quality isn't bad, and you hadn't asked, I doubt anyone would have noticed. I found a user the other day who's profile admitted all her vids were made using canibalized amvs - I don't know which is worse, that she was so upfront about it, or that no one's killed her yet. :?
