What makes a "GOOD" concept¿

Post by MindBug » Mon Jun 16, 2003 12:50 pm

I was thinking about this last night, trying to come up with an original concept I would like to use for a video I am planning to do, but then I started wondering what exactly is a concept anyway. Would you consider it using an original anime [one that's not overplayed] or an original song? Do you need to have some kind of "Hook" to have a good concept [Like "Tainted Donuts"]. How important is it to tell a story, and what distinguishes that type of video from an "action" video. Can effects be part of a concept, and if so what other AMV's would you say are a good example of this? I am basically trying to get an idea of how I would like to plan out my concept. Any other input is appreciated...

A lot of people wil grade the originality score on "has this song or anime been used before?", but I don't think that has anything to do with originality at all. I mean, wow, you chose a song no ones used before, and an anime no ones used, how hard is that? I think true originality is all in how the video is executed. Tainted donuts was a good example. And you really dont even need to have a REAL original conept to make an original video. For example, see Bogosort's "It's Tricky to make a music video" amv. This video basically uses a ton of blatantly overdone stuff, but in a creative way that makes the overall video highly original. Hell, it's possible to even make an original DBZ/LinkinPark video!

Yeah, pretty much. It's just a new take on something. It's kind of hazy, but when I see originality, it's pretty clear cut.

If it's a song and anime that have been used a lot, does it focus on a charter that does not? It is very hard to some up with new concepts though. -_-

I have only had a few really original concepts, and but they would be very very hard to do.

A concept is not an anime.

A concept is not a song.

A concept is not an effect.

A concept is an idea. A feel. A mood. A message. The concept is the reason behind the video. Why are you making it? What is it's purpose? What inspired the idea within you? What about the idea speaks to you?

An original concept is an idea, a way of melding the video footage with the audio, that hasn't been seen before, or at least not very much.

Basically.

As for overdone stuff...Some of the overdone things are overdone because they are effective ways of expressing the concept. It's good to be original. Just don't be original at the expense of the concept.
