Well earlier I gave someone advice on this and someone told me it was a waste of time, so I will give you a brief idea of where I started. Which well get you going, and then good resources for advanced editing and information and other peoples guides to see their methods.
I used SmartRipper to rip all the VOB files [DVD video files] to my harddrive. Once you have all the VOB files there are many ways you can work with them in serveral different ways. *Possibly* the easiest way to get started [for a newbie] would be to load these VOB's in "DVD2AVI" and select to "Save Project" which will create a *.D2V file that can be loaded into TMPEGEnc so you can export your clips to various MPEG formats. These clips can then be loaded into premiere. [This is the method that someone told me was a "complete waste of time" but since you are new to editing it, is probably easier than the methods suggested in their guide.] Unless you feel comfortable writing scripts for a frameserver program, that can be loaded into other editing programs.
This is the site that got me started and answered many of my DVD-ripping related questions.

This is a good guide someone recommended to me with lots of information on various topics about AMV creation, including ripping DVD's.
