I think I've got in over my head when a discussion about the RIAA becomes philosophical...trythil wrote:

First of all, assuming the US government actually does hold the RIAA to the same standards regarding internet protection, all they need to do is move their headquarters to Canada. Secondly, yes, speak with your money, but that is the whole reason the RIAA is trying to shut down P2P. Indy labels can't get on that radio. It costs somewhere in the range of $500,000 for a single song to get a decent area of coverage over the air waves (despite payola being illegal). Many, but not all, Indy labels and independant bands choose to use MP3's to get their music heard, and thus CDs sold. Without P2P programs this would be a lot more difficult, however, thanks to P2P Indy labels AND THEIR ARTISTS are making comfortable livings. This is why the RIAA wants to kill Kazaa and the like, not because they are losing money (the overwhelming majority of independant studies shows file sampling increases sales) but because they are losing control of the industry. The RIAA knows artists and consumers are already sending their dollars elsewhere, and it sees the LEGAL use of P2P as the reason.

If my memory serves me right, that would be OMG! Me!SarahtheBoring wrote:Someone in a thread way back when compared AMVing to making mods for games, and I'd invoke that now - lots of fandom-related works are made out there, from AMVs to fanfiction to cosplay (probably), that bend/break/spindlefoldandmutilate copyright.

I think the mean difference between amvs and mods though may be that while many game companies have legally allowed MODs to be created, video companies have yet to give the green light. and until the corporations that own the rights to anime material allow users to legally use the material, people will use it no matter that its ilegal. People have a tendency to not give a damn about the laws and rules of the gov't the live under.
It's not "right" but in my sense, it's okay. I'm gonna enjoy it either way! Love that song! Woot!

Ok, sorry I just couldn't resist. If the RIAA moved to Canada, wouldn't that make them the RIAC, at which point if they did attack someones computer not only would it be an FBI matter but a CIA matter as well. Hehe...
