The impossibility of making an AMV out of a anime SERIES

Post by Madzack » Sat Jun 14, 2003 7:18 pm

Note: The following msg may contain the infamous "quotation marks". The reason being that various posters may have their views & definitions on what is considered good or not, as well as others. So be prepared.

So I decided to make a Noir AMV. Doing it is another issue.

You see, the good news about serials is that you have more than enough materials. The bad news is, you have to watch through even the most crappiest episodes just to find the materials. Thus there's a possibility that a series like Noir may have those episodes?

Thankfully, there's this AMV forum where I can share with the gurus.

So generally:

How could you stand going thru all this just to find the "right" materials? Say you want to make a "sad" AMV. How do you find the "right" materials for that?

Or, is it mandatory for an AMVka to go thru the whole series just to find the series?

Specifics, regarding Noir:
If I want to make a "melodramatic" AMV out of Noir, which episode would you recommend me? How many eps should I skip just to find the "right" materials.

I would say it's mandatory. (I'd like it to be, anyway.) For "always" I watched Evangelion TV DVDs 1-8, Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion more times than I care to remember. And I still ended up creating my own crappy footage :/

Scene selection is the #2 most important thing in AMVs. #1 is the song.

I think, from that, you can probably divine at least a rough idea of how to make a sad AMV. Or a happy one, for that matter. There's many other factors that play into it -- my favorites to play with are color theory and semiotics -- but it's primarily about the scene, the mood, and the song.

I like to stick a whole episode into premiere, zoom out a ways, then scroll through the episode really fast and see which scenes catch my eye...

Yup I re-watch the show *at least* once...once is only if I know it REALLY well like Escaflowne or Kenshin...it's sad how easily I can find specific scenes for both.

I'd have to agree, especially on the song. You'll notice that most of the "good" AMVs have GREAT songs. As you said, scene selection is also just as important (now I'm not saying concept isn't because it is, but the scenes make up your concept). This is one of the things (out of a very few small skillset) that I think I do well (well at least for Romance videos) and it makes a world of difference. Now if only I didn't pick crappy 80's music.

As I said in a ( ), Scene Selection is what drives in your concept. If your concept is really creative, but has really crappy scenes to execute on it...then it's a weak video. Think of it this way, the audience only HEARS the song you choose and SEES the scenes you select...yeah I know how blatantly obvious that statement is, but what I'm getting at is that those two things are the most important things in an AMV with some 'evidence' (as Trythil has stated).

(And no MJ I dont' think it's crappy, I love the 80's, it's people here who seem to hate it)

I may or may not put "crappy" scenes in an AMV, but my point is finding materials that "hit the spot", something the song represents from the anime and vice versa. Also, should I look into certain "important" or "key" episodes to find the materials that have to do with my concept. Like, say, I want to make an AMV about Spike and Julia's relationships. Should I use the Spike/Vicious/Julia arc episodes to find the materials or should I add in moments from other eps?

Both...you'll be surprised what good scenes you'll find it fairly trivial episodes/events. The whole video doesn't HAVE to be from them or have both characters in it right? I'd imagine there are plenty of great scenes you can use that would not have the original context in the episode, but would within yours...because its YOUR video and you define what the scene is doing...where it goes...make sense?

Yeah it's sad when someone can't figure out what scene from Kenshin you are trying to explain to them, so you need to give them the episode number, which you just happen to know off the top of your head. ;)

I don't think I quite understand the question, perhaps because of how it's phrased. But regardless, watching through a series is the easiest part of the deal... and, at least for me, the least time-consuming. Watching through a whole episode - even at regular speed - and taking note of what I could use in it takes half an hour. In the editing phase, two seconds of video usually takes two or three hours.

So. I consider scanning eps the easy part.

See, me, I do it tyhe easy/stupid way. I rip the whole thing, the whole series, and pan through it in DVD2AVI looking for scenes that catch my eye, if I don't already have some specific scenes in mind. It sucks, because it takes me awhile to find the scene I want, but for some reason I do it anyway.
