Anime endings

Post by Anime Jedi » Sat Aug 10, 2002 8:37 am

One of the most critical points of the series, would be the ending. Without a good ending, it leaves you confused and frustrated. But if it's done right, you feel almost as if your mind has been brought to peace. Right now I'm still mostly only experienced with the anime on TV, so you never know, my complaints might be directly because of that.

Anyways, what anime ending really left you speechless, or more or less were pretty good? And which ones did you think left you feeling empty and full of questions?

I really liked the show Medabots, but the ending was completely awful. First of all, I'm sure everyone was waiting for Henry to reveal himself as SMX, well that never happened. Wait, maybe he isn't, lol, that'll be the day. Another thin, what's with that Brandon dude being an alien? Sure... we can fix everything up in a series and tie up all the loose ends by blaming the aliens. And that giant Metabee, I thought he was going to fight. Not just stand there and shoot and the bad dude, how boring!

The only one that I thought had a good ending was Vision of Escaflowne. It tooks it's time to finish everything up, and left you feeling pretty good.
How about you guys?

Love Hina Again - worst fucking ending EVER. God I was so pissed when they didn't go with the manga ending and instead just showed that shit.

Angelic Layer - This ending was pretty good, didn't depress me like a lot of other endings do.

Full Metal Panic - The ending itself was okay, but leading upto the ending (Sagara vs Gauln) was pretty blah.

Weiss Kreuz OVA - Not good, not bad, just fucked up.

Comic Party - Eh

Vandread 2nd Stage - Cute

Best endings -

Neon Genesis Evangelion - My friend and I were knocked out by the end of the TV show. We had been told how bad it was by many of our friends... and then when we finally saw it, we were mystified how they could say that. We talked about the show for over 6 hours after seeing it and were just thrilled by the powerful message of the show.

The Hakkenden - Another powerful ending. This show was a complicated title and it has taken me a while to piece many facts together... but I love this series and find the ending to be strong

Giant Robo and Cowboy Bebop had impressive endings.

El Hazard (the original OAV) - Best ending of a romantic title ever.

Pompoko - What a mix of feelings you have by the end of the movie.

Bad Endings

Vision of Escaflowne - I felt rather peeved at the way the show ened... it almost felt forced. Felt like the characters suddenly had to break from this GREAT story to give us a very stereotypical anime ending. Like the show suddenly dropped 50 stories in quality. It bothered me because the show was so good until the end.

El Hazard 2nd OAV - That giant machine was ridiculous... and didn't fit in with the established storyline or the established technology. Everything about the 2nd OAV was very bad... they ignored many facts from the original, they ignored the wonderful world set up by the original, they got rid of the charm and the character and worst of all... what they did to Ifurita is UNFORGIVABLE! GRRR!! I threw the tapes away... and I am VERY ANGRY that Pioneer is forcing me to buy the 2nd OAV along with the first in their DVD set... guess I will have a shiny new coaster.

Tenchi Muyo 2nd OAV - What was the point? No story... no resolutions... and none of the charm of the original OAV.

End of Evangelion - Personally, I think this movie was just a big F-You to all the people who couldn't get the TV series ending. Still... when I think how great the ending of the TV show was...and what a powerful message it had...and how much it meant to me... and then I think of that weak, negative, and rather confused ending of the movie... it just feels to me like it damages something that was great just by existing

Escaflowne the Movie - Aside from the music and the animation, I have almost nothing good to say about this movie. It was weak from beginning to it's rather pathetic ending. Stick with the TV show, I say.

Those are just the first that came to mind...

Kodomo no Omocha - After going thru 102 episodes with Sana and Hayama and the gang, I wasn't dissapointed at all. It gave you enough to feel finality, but keep you wondering about what would happen if the series had continued.

Gravitation was nice in that it didn't try to fix everyone's problems. There were major issues that Shu'ichi and Yuki needed to work on, but they were together, and you could tell that it was going to get better.

I guess the frustration comes in when a series has no definate ending, and then they stop making episodes. You're left with all this build-up, and a great plot that has so much potential, but because no one is going to pick up the remaining episodes/rest of the series, you're stuck; unless you read the manga.

Case in point: Hunter x Hunter. Probably the best anime made. 50+ episodes with the series still going in Weekly Shounen Jump. But the anime stopped right in the middle of the story. I guess what I'm trying to say is that unless you begin watching anime that has a definate # of episodes made, like
Haunted Junction
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Fruits Basket
Full Metal Panic, etc
you have to realize the potential for dissapointment.

Cowboy Bebop has a great ending, I think. Also Trigun, Eva, Lain, I liked the ending of the third Tenchi movie as well. As well as Wings of Honnaemise, which is excellant in every aspect.

Bastard, I didn't like the ending too much. It just kind of drops off. Same with Tenchi Muyo (although, technically, I am talking about the second Tenchi Muyo OAV). Tenchi Universe, I don't like at all. It goes nowhere, and the ending felt contrived. I like the OAV better, even with the cliff-hanger ending. I also did not like Angel Sanctuary's ending.

I really liked the ending to the Kenshin OAV Seisouhen. Some people absolutely hated it...probably because of the finality of it. I thought it was so beautiful and I couldn't think of a better ending myself, given the tragedy of Kenshin's life.

If we're talking about anime and not manga, I didn't like the way the anime for Ranma and Kodomo no omocha ended in comparison with the manga. Both of those left out important character development points (and changed plot lines entirely too much!) that I thought were both compelling and would lead you to see what happens after the ending in a completely different way.

It's also interesting to see the Tenchi Muyo OVA being revived..for me, this will be years after I had watched the OVA series 1. Back then, I had to go to the manga since I wasn't too fond of any of the tv series. I wonder if putting years in between the OVA and it's ending will have any impact on how it affects me.

i havent seen the movie yet, but the series ending itself was sort of teetering on the border between being an epic end and a cheap conclusion for producers, but i liked it anyway

though personally i would like to see the answers of the questions left behind
AOL discs.... just chuck 'em

Oh, and I forgot to mention, Kimagure Orange Road. That series has *the* most complete ending of any anime I have ever seen. The tv series ends with a hint but no conclusion.

Then there are two movies made.

The first one shows exactly what happened and it's VERY sad. :( Well, if you care about all 3 characters involved in the triangle, it's that sad.

The last movie "Summer's Beginning" shows 5 years after the first movie. And it pretty much ends it all, but in a very nice way given the circumstances.

Endings that I thought were interesting are Lain and Eva. Those both left me in deep thought. By the time I reached the end I just couldn't think of anything else.

A couple of endings that I just loved were El-Hazard (first OVA), Fushigi Yuugi, and Kimagure Orange Road. These all have incredibly heart-warming endings which I just love...

berserk, i hear alot of complaints about the ending because you don't know what happened, and i always say the anime is like a really long comercial for the manga, i been looking into it and believe me it's damn hard to find english versions. but the ending in berserk the anime would have to be one of the worst ending for an anime. i didn't mind it but i read into berserk too much i think i mean i figured out what happened and rea as much manga as i could find. but for an anime with a really good ending go for cowboy bebop, i mean i watched the whole series and found myself shouting at spike to be smarter, he couldv'e at least worn a bullet proof vest. well i wont spoil it but i really enjoyed the ending. for that reason. trigun has a decent endng but your left with alot of what happens now questions. its good but it could be more of an ending rather than a new begining. tenchi the sries had my favorite anime ending. everybody comes back and the "endless festival" continues. which is the only way to go with that anime. leaves them room to continue it. and they should, tenchi in tokyo disapointed me so i don't consider it an extention they need to do more with the series.
